For this reason there is but little chance of controlling this pest by insecticides, tjunt to entomologists of anj States umted Department of who worked on the have r;cuiture the that major control efforts problem spoup pe directed toward cultural pracCes which will lead to the zation or the destruction of infested Measures recommended are: pantSFeeding to live stock, burning, or plowing under; selection of varieties ot corn least susceptible to severe injury, and regulating the time of planting to escape serious infestation and yet produce satisfactory yields. Control measures used must take into consideration the fact that in the Xew England infested area two generations occur annually and the insects attack many plants in addition to corn, while in the western areas, in- eluding Xew York and the region around the Great Lakes, the corn borer is single brooded and confined principally to corn. In Xew England, therefore, it is necessary to utilize or destroy all plants or crop residues wh.ch are listed as hosts of the corn borer, especially large - stemmed grasses and many roadside weeds. In the sections where corn is chefiy attacked, low cutting, shredding, deep plowing, and burning of stubble and stalks are recommended measures. bees turn fragrant I; iwers1 into honey money for thrifty farmers. The yellow com is rich In vitamine A, whereas white corn Is deficient in this essential constituent Feeding tests have proved that yellow corn in the ration Is conducive to healthy chickens, and that greater egg production is possible, as well as & higher percentage of hatchability. The breeding flock in particular should be supplied with yellow corn. The Missouri experiment station has conducted tests to determine the rela- tive feeding value of Light and dailc egg yolks. The light yolks from hens fed white corn were fed one group of chicks, while another group was fed yellow yolks from hens fed yellow The chicks receiving the white yolks developed leg weakness and failed to grow properly, while those receiving the dark yolks developed and were vigorous and healthy. ., ARTHUR WISCOMBE Sanitation Is Big Help to Reduce Fowl Cholera Fowl (dioiera is one of the greatest menaces to poultry flocks, declared Dr. J. A. Stokdyk of the Kansas State agricultural college. From July 6 to August 21 the bulk of Kaw valley potatoes Sales he said. moved to market, records were obtained on 539 cars marketed during this period, or 13.5 per cent of the Kaw valley potato crop. A number of growers were marketing U. S. Xo. 1 potatoes. These outsold partly graded potatoes 81 per cent of the time. Partly graded potatoes outsold U. S. No. 1 only 13 per cent of the time. This indicates that the grower who has his potatoes graded and inspected under Federal supervision so that they grade U. S. No. 1 has from 80 to 90 chances out of every 10O of getting a higher price than he would obtain if his potatoes were cot graded or were only partly graded. Selling potatoes in branded sacks also paid. Branded sacks outsold sacks for the same grade and same method of sale 57 per cent of the time. Unbranded sacks outsold branded sacks for the same grade and same method of sale only 34 per cent of the Line. In the remaining 9 per cent of instances, returns were approximately the same for branded and unbranued potatoes. The experiences of the growers show clearly that grading potatoes and using branded sacks pay big returns. The results in 192(3 indicate the progress Kaw valley growers have made in the last six years. Practical- a1 t the improvement has come that time which marks the period during which the Kaw Valley Potato Growers association has been func-wittioning. ed Useful Manure Floor The use of the manure floor or stop age shed, with an occasional use of manure spreader is a step that goes hand in hand with good dairy farm ing.
