the students participated because they wanted to be admitted to classes which fill up quickly Many more simply wanted to get winter quarter registration out of the way before the Christmas vacation and before the long lines formed at the general registration in January What students may not have known is that they were participating in a process which is designed to do more than just avoid long registration lines The preregistration exercise allows USU administrators and faculty to know in advance what kind of planning will be needed for the next quarter Preregistration can give administrators a better idea of which classes will not have sufficient enrollment They can also tell which classes will have enough enrollment to warrant expanding their capacities Preregistration can give faculty a better idea of how many books to order for a particular class— thereby avoiding the problems of book shortages And in all cases preregistration gets the needed information months in advance so there is time to make necessary adjustments The Utah Statesman believes that like this should not be overlooked In fact advantages measures should be taken to get more students to participate in the simple process of preregtstration By involving more students in the planning exercise quarters which follow will be able to run more smoothly USU officials should use a variety of say that “society is the victim” is a cop-oto permit government persecution of alternative lifestyles Thirdly there is no justification of marijuana laws on the grounds that it “protects people from themselves” If we are to accept this then there is really no end to government control over our lives It’s hard to accept that argument in a country where a great number of people own firearms or refuse to wear seatbelts Finally the enforcement of marijuana laws is selective and unfair Only a small number of smokers are ever caught The police cannot be in everyone’s living room every night just to see who is illegally lighting up Those who may be caught are often persecuted to the fullest extent of the law in hopes that it will provide a warning to the others who go undetected The enforcement of these laws is a burden on taxpayers In the interest of the liberties of all US citizens we urge the following: Immediate release of all ‘pot prisoners” in the United ut In regards to the column “Glen & Shearer” entitled “Marijuana Effects Still Not Clear” that appeared in the Oct 4 issue of The Statesman we would like to joint out that there are certain effects of marijuana legislation that are clear First of all the ill conceived laws which prohibit the possession sale and use of marijuana and “paraphernalia” on the state and federal levels have made criminals out of un-jus- thousands of Americans figures law-abidi- Recent suggest that survey a large number probably majority of college educated persons have used marijuana and may still be using it There is little evidence to suggest that the laws against marijuana use have diminished its popularity The “forbidden fruit” syndrome may have actually enhanced its appeal Secondly if we are to accept the conservative position of “limited government” as being one in which people arc protected in their rights to life liberty and property then there is no place for a “victimless States These victims are crime such as marijuana Political prisoners who are be Indonesia-- — To the editor: Paula Smilanich’s article on Limbong” (Oct 14) is er- roneous As Indonesian students on this campus we felt budgets for the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration and all narcotics agencies to zero The tremendous expense of entrapping incarceration and trying the marijuana user is unjustified in a nation which is hoping to reduce the financial burdens of government 3 Repeal of all international treaties and domestic laws against the production transfer and use of marijuana! The current laws have driven this industry into the treasures of international criminal organizations These profits are also used to finance foreign dictatorships The only way to correct this problem is to legalize it 4 Let’s have a truly fire enterprise system in all commodities including marijuana Let honest business make a fair profit This could do much to help American agriculture and let Third World nations accumulate capital for lucrative If Garry M Kent W Wellia a free country reflects his own ignorance It is inconceivable that the Indonesian authorities would want to suppress his and his family’s freedom by restricting their swimming jogging roller skating hiking and tennis playing activities Indonesia is not a totalitarian regime as he im-- P led but a democratic coun even i try We all know that totalitarian regimes these tivities are encouraged “I it n broadcasting such a view bul only amplifies his naivety also is being unfair to donesia Glady Agu Wal K ( |
