Show t 6B Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, July 25, 1984 Teacher Given Honor BOUNTIFUL Steven T. Cottrell, a computer science and mathematics instructor at Woods Cross High School in Bountiful, is one of eight outstanding mathematics teachers in the country being honored at the 1984 national meeting of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SLAM). Cottrell has been selected by his own professional colleagues in the Utah state affiliate organization of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. If teachers of mathematics in the schools understand or, in fact, could see for themselves how mathematics is used in many ways in industry and government, they could transmit something of the real excitement to their students, says Hirsh Cohen, consultant to the director of research at IBM and president of SLAM. The fact that science, technology and many things of everyday life depend on mathematics is one way to help teachers and their students realize that mathematics is really an important part of our lives and, with computers, will be even more so. , . Cottrell was honored at an program for high school mathematics teachers on July 20. The days program included an industry forum, where representatives of local industry will explain the uses of mathematics and the role of mathematicians at their companies; a film series, Mathematics at Work in Society, sponsored by .the Mathematical association of America; a panel discussion on math edu cation; and an awards luncheon for the eight teachers. SLAMs awards for excellence are intended to insure that teachers realize how important teaching in the schools is in preparing people for a world in which mathematics has high leverage," according to Cohen. SLAM also wants to make people feel good about their jobs and themselves. all-d- POWER CEDAR FENCING ATTIC VENT Quality picket fencing. . .at affordable prices! Will ventilate 500 sq. feet.
