Today, as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, Lee is about to make that dream a reality. On July 2 he will report to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Tex., to begin training as a mission specialist in NASAs Space Shuttle Program. Lee, an 6 pilot assigned to the 4th Tactical Fighter Squadron of the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, said he has been working for 5 years to get into the astronaut program. He is one of 17 specialists selected from 14,934 applicants for a shuttle position and, at 31, will be one of the' youngest people in the program. Ive kept track of the space program and where it was headed, said Lee. During the second and third years we will start training for a specific flight and mission, he said. As the program is set up now, mission specialists will be going on a mission about once a year after that. The Viroqua, Wise., native says he is looking forward to making his own contribution to the space program.
