John Miller, manager of the ice rink at the center, said a recent survey of the community showed that many people did not know the complex had an ice rink. He said his goal is to let area residents know about the wide variety of activities avail- able at the center. ; The 1984 Figure Skating will be held at the Boun-- ; tiful Ice Arena and the Salt Palace, Jan. 17 through 21. Mill- er said the best skaters in the United States will be competing ; for a spot on the Olympic team. He said the recreation center is excited about being chosen as one of the hosts for the event. : This is the first time the Nation-- ; als have been held in Utah and being chosen speaks very highly of the qualilty of the Bountiful facility, Miller said. ", i '! . Na-tiona- ls ? ! ; ; ! The ice skating rink is 01 ym-- ; pic size and will accomodate O 1,500 spectators. It is available year round to public skating. ; The rink is also used by figure skating clubs and amateur ice : , hockey dubs. The Western Regional Hockey : Tournament is played there. The rink also offers Learn to Skate K classes, they are taught every ; three weeks. The swimming pool at the Re-- : - creation Center is also Olympic - , size according to Ron Smith, . pool manager. It offers a lot more than public swimming. Swim lessons are taught for all ages beginning as young as 6 months in the Moms and Tots classes. This class has been so successful it was featured on the television program, Prime Time Access last year. The instructor for this class and other classes at the pool, is Irmgard Fisher. She recently competed in the Masters International Competition swim race, winning a gold medal in her division of female swimmers age 50 to 54. Her winning time in the 10 kilometer race was 4 hours, 22 minutes, 6 seconds. Fisher also belongs to the local Masters Competitive Swim Club that practices at the Bountiful pool. There is a junior competitive swim team, the Sharks. Members range in age from 5 to 18. This is one of the top swim teams in the state, according to Smith, and they will be competing for state championship during March. The Sharks and the Masters swim teams practice weekly at the Recreation Center. Teams are open to anyone who can qualify to compete. The pool offers an early morning lap swim between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Smith said he is amazed that every morning there are about 30 dedicated swimmers there doing laps. The pool is also used for sports other than swimming. Wolfes Sporting Goods sponsors a kayak club that practices at the pool. A scuba diving club also trains at the pool, and one hour aquatic exercise classes are held daily. According to Smith, with the pool, racquetball courts, exercise floor, weight room, steam room, sauna, and whirlpool an individual could develop a complete program for excercise and relaxation at the Recreation Center. Maxine Clarke manages all of the community recreation programs that take place outside of the Recreation Center. There are many programs available to area residents. The first public recreation in the area was the Bountiful Roller Skating Rink. The rink was started by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in the 50s. They ran out of funds and turned to the public for help. The South Davis Youth Center Board, consisting of 12 local businessmen, was formed, and through their efforts, money was raised to finish the rink. The roller skating rink was al- on-goi- Soft-bal- ll, so used for other community activities. The Twin Star Riding Club used the rink for square dancing. There were flower shows and community dances held at the rink. In November 1958, the skating rink burned down and according to Lloyd Hayes, who was serving on the South .Davis Youth Center Board, and managing the rink at that time, the decision was made not to rebuild the roller skating faciltiy.
