Twenty-thre- e pilots from the 4th Tactical Fighter Squadron are participating in the first of the three-phas- e exercise which F-1- 6 began March 5. Twenty-tw- o pilots from the 421st TFS will deploy to Nellis March 19 for the second phase. The 4th TFS will redeploy April 5 until April 17. Green Flag combines the mock air and ground combat training scenarios of Red Flag with intense communications and radar jamming exercises. Maj. Stephen Sniteman, 4th TFS project officer, said that in a situation, pilots would have to be familiar with electronic countermeasures real-worl- d sy-te- and how to counteract communications jamming. The training will provide aircrews with practical elec- -' tronic countermeasures experience and demonstrate the effects of communications jamming on command and control, he said. The missions well be flying are so demanding and so much information will have to be absorbed that each pilot scheduled to fly on a particular day will go only once. He noted that the squadron plans to fly 20 sorties a day. Green Flag promises to be the most intense communications jamming exercise ever performed. Nearly 135 maintenance personnel from the 4th Aircraft Maintenance Unit are supportdeployed for the ing the 12 first phase of the exercise.
