Show SOME interesting TION regarding the alaskan yukon exposi tion to be held at seattle during 1909 A bill for the participation ol 01 tha united states at the exposition has been introduced in congress and will soon come up for consideration the bill ts unique A clause Is contained in it which states that the kon pacific exposition will not ask ex hect or accept any loan of funds from the united states government nor will it ask expect or accept from the government any appropriation other than the appropriation which the gov may make tor its tion this policy on the part of the exposition management Is meeting with the approval of congressmen I 1 officials the press and the people of the country the bill that has been introduced in congress requests an appropriation of 1175 and provides tor the representation resen tation of the united states government tho non contiguous territory y and the fisheries industry as follows exhibit In stalla tion and I 1 building maintenance total t 50 alaska hawaii philippines 75 75 1 total included in cost of general govern ment exhibit indications point to the eaily pa bage ot the bill the president ol 01 the united states commended the exposition to the careful consideration of the congress in his official message delivered on december 4 1900 and also in his message delivered on december 3 1907 the latter mention being in the following terms the courage and enterprise of th citizens of the far northwest in projected alaska yukon pacific exposition to be held in 1909 sho lid receive liberal encouragement this exposition Is not sentimental in its con but seeks to exploit the natural resources of aiani a and to pro mote the commerce trade and industry of the pacific states with their neighboring states and with our lar possessions and tho neighboring countries of the pacific rhe exposi tion asks no loan from the congress but seeks lor national exhibits and exhibits of the western dependencies of the govern ment the state of and the city of seattle have shown tha characteristic western in large donations for the conduct of this exposition in which other states are lending generous assistance during the past year honorary corn missioners ol 01 the exposition visited great britain france germany hoi land russia china japan italy nor way sweden distria canada ico and the central and bouth amer lean states an I 1 have received assurances from prominent shippers and commercial a that the interest in the alms and pur poses of tre exposition in those countries Is sufficient to justify that measure of participation on their aart as will be in keeping with the scope of our exposition as we have determined it in addition to washington appropriated lor its representation sen tation at the expos tion the following states have made provision to participate oregon california pennsylvania nebraska missouri and utah assurances have been given that fifteen other states will also participate work on the grounds Is in an advanced stage the avenues circles plazas and courts have been graded and the building sites cleared tb administration building has been occupied by the executive force tor many months the manufactures building is well under way the auda borlum fine arts palace and machin ery building permanent structures rave been started the agriculture building and several minor structure are beginning to rise oregon andi california have their plans in aaion and will soon start construe tion A conservative preliminary esti mate of the probable paid admissions at the exposition Is made at 2 this will be larger than the attend ance at any previous exposition ever held in the united states with the ex of philadelphia chicago but falo and st louis exposition the probable number of visitors from east of denver is estimated at ampro |
