Wednesday morning. CUI STATE FIX THE STREET Asstciun DETOUR Judging from last years experience the section of First South street that is being paved will be impassible for at least two months more. While the ' work ' of paving is going on a fairly good street to de tour onto, and information in x the way of signs, as to which to go, would be direction an excellent advertisement for Payson, while a bad street without signs will be a very poor for our city. When the main thoroughfares the time ; were torn up during was that paving going on, the streets to get thru town on, while some little work was done on them, wore not in a verygood condition; and much unfavorable comment bn the part of tourists regarding our city was the result. s It is to be hoped that our will be not experience although some three weeks have already passed since First North street was torn up, and Second South street, which has been made the detour road, has several bad places in it. Very often, just such little things as these have a tendency to create very severe criticism regarding a town, and in this particular case a matter of only about $25 would put the street in a good condition. There are a number of beautiful residences and lawns along Second South and if the street were fixed up tourists would have time to see some of them without watching so close for brd places in the road. It would also be well to have a sign facing east at the intersection of Main and Second This way to South, reading Nephi and Eureka, with an pre-iou- arrow pointing the way, or Tifrn South to Eureka or Nephi so that travelers from the north are not compelled to stop and ask questions when they arrive at this point. It would also help .tourists to have a sign facing south at the same point with some information on it telling them how to get through town. The city has had to meet enormous" expenses during the past year or two, which reminds us that residents living opposite these bad places in the street mentioned would be helping themselves and the city if they would get busy and spend a few hours leveling these chuck holes and camels backs. But if it is necessary to spend the money, it would certainly be buying a lot of good advertising for a song. - PAYSON, UTAH Just a few - purely pertinent pointed pithy paragraphs pushed: by the pen of one who doesnt', wish to disturb the serene minds of Payson, but feels the necessity of unloading the constant ac-cumulation of dope under his, hat. Proverbs, 20:10. Thinking men and women will do well to consider the striking argument drought out brought out by thl World Trade Club of San Francisco in their campaign for adoption of the units of the metric system of weights and measures. They show a stiking anomaly: That the metric system was invented by a Briton,- James Wptt, in 1783, and yet all civil- ized nations have adopted it exclusively excepting the United States and Great Britain. British That the system of weights and measures is of German origin a relic of the old German Hanseatic trade league and yet Germany scrapt it in 1873 and adopted the metric system, invented by a Briton. People of Britiania and of America may well ask themselves whether they are not carring conservation too far. The metric System is no untried theory. Its principle the principle of decimal computation has been used iii the monetary system of the United Btates since 1786. If the United States had heeded Thomas Iefferson, we should also have adopted this system of weights and measures based on decimals-s- o simple a system that a child can learn its main ieatures in ten minutes. We know how well it works with money. It will work equally well with weights and measures. The World Trade Club has started the ball rolliug.
