Wed like to give a big Thanks to Ben and Janece Black for the work they did to promote the Ephraim City Rodeo. This is the third year they have been involved in getting a rodeo in Ephraim as well as helping get the arena rebuilt so we could have rodeos. Ben has also given several years service as chairman of the Ephraim City Arena Committee. Ben and Janece will be leaving Ephraim and we want them to know that we really appreciate all the service they have given and wish them the best of luck. On behalf of the Parks and Recreation Board, thanks again everyone who helps in anyway to further recreation in Ephraim. We do appreciate you. Marcea D. Nielson Ephraim City Parks and Recreation Board Secretary The Ephraim City Parks and Recreation Board would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to some citizens in our community. We feel they really go the extra mile in giving many hours of service to this community. Because of this, Ephraim participated in two very successful events in June. One of these was the Ephraim Lions Tournament and the other was the Ephraim City Rodeo. We know that many citizens helped to make these events successful and we wish to express our appreciation to all of them. However, we particularly want to commend Bart Nelson for organizing the tournament, Paul Rasmussen and Bob Oliver for their efficient handling of the food service booth and Marlin Mason for a really fine job of announcing the games. Thank you very much and all of those who worked with you to Greedy people over water issue To the Editor: and I drove around at 6:30 a.m. July 8th and we observed at least 30 or more people in the north half of town still watering. On the evening of July 7th my wife and I rode around the south half of town I witnessed at least 30 people watering before their turn. It makes me sick to think the people in our small town can be so dishonest and greedy. A friend To the so called good citizens of Manti, as chairman of the pressurized water system, I would like to express my feelings towards not all, but many people in town. I have never in my life observed so many greedy, lying, two faced people as I have seen since our water ran short in the first week of July. The people I observed cheating on the water on our alternate days were some of our elected officials, our church officials, our appointed officials, also our middle and lower class of people, as some class them. Some of the first people to complain were those who abused our rules the most. When I saw people watering, when they were not supposed to, I called them Now if there is anyone in town that thinks they can organize the irrigation system better than the committee that is trying to be fair, we welcome you to take our places on the irrigation board. We receive no pay for our efforts, and I dont think we deserve the criticism we receive from some people in town. No names need to be mentioned you all know who is - and you should have heard the cussing I got and what a I was for telling them what to do. They said as long as there doing the cheating and being unfair and dishonest to your friends and neighbors. (People need to understand, one irrigation company official said, that the culinary system is owned and operated by fanti City and the pressurized system is owned and operated by Manti Irrigation Co.) The change in schedule was also made because the pressurized system was not set up to permit delivery of the water to one section of town while shutting the water off in other sections. That made administration of the first schedule extremely difficult, with many users violating the regulations. Manti Irrigation Co. president, Ned Madsen said that the company does have the on Page 8) author-(Contlnu- New Pressurized Irrigation E. The schedule provides that all city pressurized system users will use water through July as follows: July 14 - 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. the next day; July 19 - 6 a.m. to 6 a.m.; July 24 - 6 a.m. to 6 a.m.; July 29 - 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. No use will be permitted on other days. Major water users - the schools, the city, and churches - are being asked to follow a 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. schedule on the watering days as a way of maintaining pressure in the system through the daytime hours of heavy use. And residents are asked to be conservative in their use of water during those days. These conservation practices asked for include an avoidance of flood (furrow) irrigation when possible, not using more than four rain bird type heads atone time, not letting water run longer than needed (a special problem at night) at one place. Last weekend we went to Moab for the annual Utah Press Association summer convention. It was 104 in Moab, and the only relief from the heat was when we took a float trip down the Colorado River. After being assured by our professional raft handler that we would not be swept overboard by surging white water, Beth and I agreed to go along. The mighty Colorado was pretty tame. In fact, I dont think it had much more water than the Salt Riverl tried to fish the week before. What were touted as "rapids" actually were merely ripples. Only once did a wave splash in the raft. Thus, most of the time was spent either trying to drown the people in the other rafts, by splashing on them with oars or buckets, or else jumping in the river and floating with your lifejacket on. Beth and I stayed in the boat, but I was ready to push her out if she called me an "old goat" just once. She didn t. In fact, we gave her a paddle too, and made her use it, although her feeble efforts didn't have much effect. I sat on the edge with one foot in the water, and paddled when asked to do so by our navigator. I really don't think I helped much either, but it wasn't crucial anyway. k I rubbed It was fun, though, and thanks to the on, I didn't even get sunburned. Lest you think all we do is vacation all summer, I should say that I justified it by telling myself how hard I was going to work during the Pageant. We're already working. This week we're putting out our special Pageant Supplement Section. Weve won numerous prizes with this section and hope you take time to read it. I asked my son Jerry, who was here from Illinois to attend my other son, David's missionary farewell last Sunday, to write an article about why Mormons build temples. He really outdid himself. He took two days researching and writing, and the final product filled nearly two pages. The bottom line is that it is a fine article. I hope you take time to read it - as well as the rest of the special section. It contains valuable as well as interesting material. It is distributed to nearly 15,000 people at various places in Manti and it's free. sun-bloc- - As we approach the Pageant I think we'll have the Lord confused. Many are praying for rain we need so badly, while Pageant people are praying it doesnt rain, as least during the Pageant performance. If we had our way, it would rain all day and clear up about 5 p.m., then begin raining again after the Pageant around midnight. But as my mom used to say, "If wish were fishes, we'd all have a fry. If were biscuits, we'd eat till we die." (You fill in the blank. I'm in enough trouble with the stake president already by swearing so much in last week's column.) Not so trivial: Be sure to be friendly to all our visitors during the Pageant. Our attitude may help some marvelous industry to locate here. Joe and Ann Schrotz were general chairmen, assisted by Lewis and Janet Garbe. Elaine Mortensen was program chairman. Many others, committee chairmen, etc. worked diligently to make this a pleasant and memorable experience for all who attended. We extend thanks to all who served, and all who attended.' The event served to highlight the cooperation and unity which make Manti such a great place to live. Mayor and Town Council of Manti |
