Show Messenger-Enterpris- Thursday, September 3, 992 e, Page 1 4 01 1 Badgers to face Western Arizona Sept. 5th BY GARY CHIDESTER The Badgers prepare to welcome home former Snow College football coach Walt Criner but there will be no sympathy on the field. Criner led the Badgers to their national championship in 1985 and nowheadsthe Matadors of Arizona Western, the first opponent for Snow College, September 5 at Badger Stadium. This will be a match-u- p of the student and the teacher," said Badger Head Coach Paul Tidwell. Walt (Criner) hired me here at Snow and I learned a lot from him, winning was one of them. Conditioning practices will slowly give way for more time to v work on plays and game preparation over the next few them on the road. Snow College also has the mixed blessing of playing their first three games at home in Badger Stadium. The Badgers will give fans plenty of excitement this year with a brick wall defense and an explosive offense that will be a days. I feel very good about the shape the players are in, said Tidwell. They have come into camp ready to play football. Snow College will begin the season with a national ranking of 23, which is where the Badgers started last year before reaching as high as number four. The contender for the conference championship. Keith Jackson and Cody Allred will return for Snow College as wide receivers. Offensively we have some players that can really make things happen, said Tidwell. Jackson has great speed and can run well after he makes the catch. Allred is one of the most competitive players on the team. Badgers finished with an 2 record and ranked 15 in the 8-- nation. There are never any easy games in this league, said Tidwell.Ricks College, Glendale and Dixie will probably be the toughest competition and we play He will do everything he can to catch the ball if its in his area" Weve always taken pride in our defense, continued Tidwell. This year we have the best defensive backfield weve ever had. Jones led the league in interceptions with nine, four returned for Badger touchdowns, and return yardage after interceptions." Snow College is doing a lot to make Badger Stadium the place to be on Saturdays. Not only do the Badgers have one of the best teams in the league but they bring total entertainment to the game. Under the direction ofPublic Relations Dean Director ODriscoll, Snow College hashad tailgate parties at every home game. The tailgate parties will continue again this year with even more fun and excitement ... Greetings From U S WEST Communications planned. am Steve Linton, Community Affairs Manager for Central Utah. Since I don't have an opportunity to personally visit with each of you, I will be writing adtorials periodically to advise you of telecommunications issues. If this information prompts questions or comments, you are welcome to call me at 374- - 4443 (free call) in Provo. Of specific interest to our customers and U S WEST is our recent $ 3 .2 million rate increase request. The largest portion of the request is due to nationally mandated accounting changes which require new revenues to implement, as well as other accounting adjustments that insure revenues and expenses are made in acc.or-danc- e with accepted accounting principles. Some 75 of the requested revenues will be used to offset the additional expenses due to the accounting changes. The net impact on U S WEST Communications' earnings will be zero. Only $ 7.6 million of the request would result in additional earnings for U S WEST. We believe the increase is justified so we can pay an adequate return to our stockholders. It is essential to maintain stockholder confidence in our company and to attract the capital investments used to maintain and improve the telecommunications infrastructure needed for further economic development of Utah. Our last rate increase was in 1985. Since 1986, we have returned $ 95 million to our customers in the form of rate reductions. In just the last two years we have invested almost $ 250 million in the state. This makes our investment in the last 10 years total approximately $ 1.1 billion to add nearly 200,000 new lines in support of Utah's strong economic growth. During this time of unparalleled growth, we have continued to improve efficiencies within the business. At the present time, it takes one employee to serve every 245 lines in the state, compared to 10 years ago when one employee served only 91 lines. Our proposal would set basic rates for residential telephone service with unlimited local calling at approximately $ 10 to $ 18 per month, depending on where you live. This is close to the same rate you paid for service back in 1984. Look at the chart to the right and youll see telephone service is comparable to the cost of a movie or dinner out for two, an all day pass at the local amusement park or a month of basic cable TV service. What else can you buy that gives you the same value at the price of local telephone service? j $1000 All Badgerfootball 1 gamescan be heard on KMTI 650.
