W Parimutuel gambling benefits few To the Editor: Horse racing, in the best of all possible worlds, is a test of skill. Horse racing involving quick-fi- x parimutuel gambling profits as an incentive can also be a world of intense misery and abuse. We believe it is clear that parimutuel gambling would only benefit a few namely breeders, while all of us get to pay the freight if things dont go as - planned. Our organization has no stand on how Utahns spend their money, but is convinced Utahns need to understand thatfor every Secretariat there are tens of thousands of cannery horses. To horses are simply a cash crop, bom and bred to make money. A of Horse Illustrated listed 13 horse rescue groups all of them overworked. Overbreeding has caused an overpopulation of equines in the US, many more valuable dead than alive. Its a bad situation, and, like any industry that rides on the backs of animals, has potential to become far worse. Race horses recent issue parimutuel gambling may be muddy, Wasatch Humane believes the humane choice is clearly to not bring it into the state. Save this historic building welcome sight to all and a real benefit to our town. Something wonderful is taking place in Ephraim right now. It concerns one of our very old picturesque little stores which sits on Center Street, west of Anderson Drug. More and more information is coming to light on the history of this little store. It now appears it was first a post office in the 1800s, then a meat market, after which it became a bakery and was referred to as the donut shop (perhaps sold candy, too), then a tailor shop, next a cream station, and finally living quarters for immigrant August Swenson. After he died, it stood vacant until now. It has also possibly been a millinery, a shoe repair and a feed store (or at least sold feed). If anyone has some information on this little building with the colorful past, please contact McKay and Sherron 7 Andre asen at or mail it to: 135 W. 100 N. 43-- Ephraim, Utah 84627. Also, any photos of it in the early days would be very helpful. There is much affection in townfor this ornate little building as evidenced by the enthusiastic responses of many interested citizens and former residents as well. And there are some who think it should be torn down. But, just as with the renovation and Relief Society of the Granary, we believe that once 283-636- 2, Co-o- p The wonderful thing is that have rallied to so many people the call to donate their encouragement, their labor, their money. Since getting the word out on this building people have been putting their views in writing and each day more favorable . esponses come in. We have seen some surprising and gratifying expressions of hope and faith in this buildings future, and we have seen a good many people literally light up as they consider the effects of restoring and placing this little store on Ephraims main street as part of the Main Street entrance to Ephraim Square Pioneer Park. It could serve as a charming information center for the park and other things as well. We want to publicly thank all the wonderful people who are showing your support in this worthwhile, happy endeavor, and we encourage all those who have not yet written a response to the proposal to please do so now and take it to the Andreasens, or call us, just as soon as possible. This is a case where we cant afford to think our opinion doesnt matter. Our city leaders will listen to your views and act on them only if they hear from you, and we will get your views to them. I snorted last Saturday as I reluctantly prepared to turn off the TV and go out in the garden to pull weeds. I dont know where it is, but surely you can sniff it out," Beth snorted back. I bought this sweat shirt back when I lived in Wyoming, say about 1946. Back in those good old days the color of hunter orange hadnt been invented yet and the law said a hunter had to wear red. So I bought this bright red sweat I found it to be comfortable to wear, so I began to wear it every Saturday. But soon it began to fade and I finally convinced Beth she was washing it too often. She acquiesced - and quit washing it altogether. Oh, I slipped it into the laundry every couple of years - but it didnt help it too much. It eventually got a hole in front and the sleeves got quite frayed. I liked it! I think every man deserves to go unshaven and wear disreputable clothes occasionally - every Saturday for example. It kind of buoys us up and helps us accept the fact that we have to wear a tie on Sunday or even on other days if youre a school teacher or an attorney. and But I think every attorney and school teacher to faded sweat wear red shirt should have a newspaperman on Saturday. That shirt was and is - an old friend ofmine and I didnt want to lose it Ignoring Be ths sarcastic remark about its odoriferousness, I kept looking. After checking my closet, hers, the spare bedroom and the guest room (we call it that because it sounds high class) I still couldnt find it I became suspicious. I knew Beth didnt like it and might even take drastic steps to assure its demise. But I didnt dare come right out and accuse her. When did you wash it last? I asked hopefully. I think it was Christmastime, she said and then added an as afterthought, "1984 that is." You didnt give it to Deseret Industries or tear it up for rags, did you?" I asked accusingly. It almost brought tears to my eyes to imagine that if Deseret Industries got hold of it they would renovate it I should say not," Beth said haughtily. Nobody in his right mind would want it, and its a cinch DI couldnt restore it to decency. A3 for using it for rags, I can get cleaner ones at the office after Lloyd has cleaned his press with them." I was somewhat offended, but not surprised. I knew that shed be happier when the shirt had gone to its great reward. Well, I just cant work outside without it," I said firmly, turning on the TV again. About 30 minutes later she appeared, the sweat shirt in her hand. Guess where I found it? she said as she stood it up on the floor. Where? I gasped On the floor of the hall closet, under a box of gloves," she announced proudly. A likely story," I said foolishly. "Listen, you old goat, get smart with me and I'll wash it again," she threatened. I knew it couldnt handle another washing. Anything but that," I mumbled as I fluffed it up, slipped into it and went out to the garden. - - - - Lewis David Anderson Bryan Wright called to serve in North Carolina LDS Mission Bryan Alder Wright, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W.
