Show Manti Messenger Ephraim Enterprise, April 13. 19C4 Page 5 Manti High Baseball Team Major Changes in 1994 Big Game Hunting Regulations The Utah Board of Big Game Control has set hunting regulations for 1994. The five member board is made up of one representative each from public lands agencies, sportsmen, cattlemen, and wool growers. The fifth member, from the Division of Wildlife, votes only as a tiebreaker. This years regulations include some changes that will heavily impact sport hunting as Utahns have come to know it. Many sportsmen were concerned that the cap of 97,000 buck deer permits would transfer potentially damaging hunting pressure to the states elk herds. The board addressed this issue by placing a 40,000 permit cap on rifle bull elk permits. This number is slightly higher than the 36,600 permits that were sold last year. Perhaps the biggest adjustment hunters will need to make this year is the new one big game hunt policy. Under this ruling, sportsmen will only be allowed to hunt one male big game animal in 1994. If a hunter draws out for any hunt for any male big game species, (bull buffalo, bull moose, bull elk, buck deer, buck antelope, bighorn sheep, or mountain goat), that will be the only hunt, other than antlerless deer or elk, or doefawn antelope, that he or she will be allowed. The reasoning behind this regulation is to allow as many hunters as possible a chance to get a buckbull permit. All permits will be sold by random draw with an application period from May There will be no over the counter permit sales. Permits will be issued by regional quota based on historical hunting pressure. Applications will require hunters to specify which region they choose to hunt in. The deer archery season will run 23 days, August 20 to September 20. Archers will be allowed to take only bucks. The rifle hunt will be seven days, October 22 to 28, also buck only. Muzzle loaders will have seven days to hunt from November 2 to 8. This features, for the first time, a Wednesday season opener for 5. Bullets used must weigh at least 170 grains, which will eliminate 45 caliber round balls. Muzzle loaders will be allowed to use approved fixed lx (one power) scopes to hunt both deer and elk. The archery elk season will be 16 days from September 1 through 16. One thousand permits will be validated hunters choice. There is no permit cap on archery elk permits. The rifle elk hunt will last 154 days In addition, from October there will be 30 any bull permits on the Manti Elk Unit. Season dates were not available at press time. Muzzle loaders will have 11 days, from September This hunt will have 300 limited entry permits for hunting on any unit that does not have an earlier bugle" limited entry hunt An additional 200 permits will be available for any general season unit. Dates for this group of hunters will be November Anyone who does not draw a buck or bull permit in 1994 will have priority in 1995. This should guarantee sportsmen a hunt at least every other year.
