Show Page 2, Manti Messenger Ephraim Enterprise, April 13, 1994 Letter to the Editor. I am writing in response to your article on Gang Like Incident dated March 23, 1994. First of all, this is not the first in- side. If you read the police report, Crenshaw did everything and they did nothing. And what happened to guilty until proven innocent? How come out of over thirty people involved (the Polynesians, or the Japanese) not one person was charged? Some questions that Im sure have crossed everybodys minds are: 1. Where were the police? 2. Why didnt any of the residents of Ephraim bother to call the police? 3. How can one hour of chaos go on and no one heard nothing and no one did anything in this small town? 4. How can three people think that cident involving these same students at Snow College. Mr. Green (from Snow College) was told that they were causing a problem with Crenshaw (as you have labeled him, not his real name) and another person. That was over a year ago, and he was asked to do something about these same football players. Mr. Greens response was stay away from the college and the streets around it. Even though this is a public place. This, in my eyes, gave these people the right to do what they wanted to do, and they did, and do. Can you explain how all this trouble can go on for over an hour and no one made a phone call to the police? Not one resident called the police, not one police officer heard a thing? Guns being fired, people hollering, tires squealing down the streets, but no one heard a thing, and yet all this was to get a license number and nothing else, so they say. Tell me what would you do if you were harassed where you worked, when you went to either Top Stop take on all they and Polynesians Japanese? (Manti of.Ephraim) or when you went to visit a friend? And no matter what you did no one would do a Gang. These people are here and have been. How for are you going to let them go before you cant stop them and your land becomes theirs? Or you have to bear your firearms to stop them? This does happen. I know Ive had to do it And its a total disruption in your life. You cant walk down the street without being on guard. You have to be ready to pull a gun on a kid before they can pull one on you. This does not have to be your life. It can be stopped. What can you do to stop thing about it No (Hie would make it stop. There are a lot of high school students and college students that fear these people, and these Polynesians can Manti Beautification Committee Announces April Award Winners these Lois Larson was one surprised person when she found out that she and C R had been awarded the best upkept award for April. In fact, the whole neighborhood on south Main is a showpiece, but this month special congratulations go to the Polynesians do not like white people. You say Crenshaw (label) is a gang member. How do you consider one person and two friends a gang? Yet over thirty people is only considered the football players? It would seem to me that more than three people would be considered a gang. Especially in these given circumstances. There was mention of the three people using a gun but no mention of the other side even having a gun. Let me inform you different They ner lot and made it sparkle. It took several years of effort, but they accomplished what they wanted to do. As Ruth Bauer said, It sure looks better than it did! It was an effort well done. Since 1950, the expected punishment in prison time served for seri- ous crimes has dropped by more than During that same time span, the number of serious crimes 65. committed has gone up 700. Isnt it ironic that our society is fighting to spare the lives of brutal mass murderers yet condone the killing of innocent unborn babies? Dr. Morgan Reynolds of Texas A&M University has developed a formula for calculating expected The reason we have punishment so much crime, said Reynolds, is that, for many people, the benefits outweigh the costs. His expected punishment formula utilizes four probabilities. The probability of being arrested for a crime after its been committed, of being prosecuted if arrested, of being convicted if prosecuted, and of being sentenced to prison if convicted. These probabilities are then multiplied by the average time served for the offense. In the United States, about 7 of burglaries result in arrest Of those arrested, 87 are prosecuted. Of those prosecuted, 79 are convicted. Of those convicted, 25 are sent to prison. A potential burglar has only a 1.2 probability of going to . prison. Since 98 of burglaries never result in a prison sentence, the average sentence served for each act of burglary is only 4.8 days. Using the same formula, Reynolds reports that the average prison time served for murder is 2.3 years, for THE e prapenSon of tood w emSen el w$Mi be eentHwed Mfofcta. NATIONAL BEEF COOK-OF- F P.O.
