An assignment thats more important thana goodbreakfast, than homework, than chores. I struggled with how to fit this into our little weekly column visits. Im supposed to talk about being a good parent. Working with your childs teacher. I try to focus on children. But this week, its about my own mother-yoMom. Because when you called me a few weeks ago to say theyd found the lumps were malignant when you told me you had breast cancer, and the doctors would have to do a mastectomy, you turned me into a scared little girl. And I wanted my u. Mommy. In the past few weeks. Ive thought of all the little boys and little girls in this country whose Mommies werent there because of this disease. And I thought how smart Mom was to have a simple yearly checkup-- A mammogram. I know four women my age who ha ve been diagnosed with breast cancer. So many others would tell me of mothers, aunts, neighbors and colleagues who had breast cancer when I mentioned my mothers surgery. I dont understand why it hits who it hits, but its a danger to us, and we have to fight it And that means we have to care about ourselves. For our own sake and for the sake of our families. that strike without warning and without anything we might have done to detect or prevent them. But doctors have given us the tools to fight many others. Its up to us to use them. Cancer screenings are designed to catch cancer before it can spread. Its simple. Its painless. And so here is your simple, painless assignment: Call your doctor or clinic THIS WEEK. Dont wait for a more convenient time, there never will be one. Schedule an appointment for a cancer screening, every woman should be checked for cervical cancer once a year. Women who are at least 35 should begin having mammogram. Your doctor will advise you how often, depending cm your health and medical history. For instance, if your mother, aunts or sisters have had breast cancer, you may be considered at greater risk. Certain occupations (teachers, for instance) also show a greater risk for breast cancer. But the only way to know where you stand is to make that appointment.
