Some residents did not have their power restored until after 8 p.m. that evening. The cause: lightning struck a Utah Power and Light power pole five miles north of Mona, on the east side of the freeway, sometime around 12:45 p.m. This downed 15 the power supply line to Mona, which immediately interrupted power to that town, and simultaneously ignited the abundant dry grass in the area. Monas fire department was dispatched at about :30 p.m. and was able to confine the fire to 200 acres, but not before six power poles were destroyed, causing the loss of three feeder lines. The power feeder to Mona was a 46,000 kv (kilovolt) line; the second line downed was also a 46,000 kv line. Shortly after dark the area was hit by an intensive display of electronics, followed by a brief, but intense burst of heavy rain. In Manti, the rain came down in buckets. Within one minute the gutters on Main Street were overflowing. In the middle of the short deluge, following a large thunderclap, emergency vehicles responded to a call in the vicinity of First East and Third South. A resident sent in the alarm when heshe viewed a large apparent fireball which it was suspected had started a fire. The fire department, as well as the ambulance crew, responded quickly. Investigation found nothing out of order, however. The storm was of short duration, and shortly thereafter, the stars could again be seen looking down on a very wet, but thoroughly clean, landscape. Manti-Ephrai- was a 138,000 kv line; the three lines combined comprise the only power feed from Nebo to Jerusalem substations. Utah Power quickly moved to power from the south the through Sigurd substation, but it had to do a piece at a time. Once the fire was put out, around 8:30 p.m. Monday night, UP&L crew's worked to put up new poles and restore the north power feed by 6:22 a.m. Tuesday. Seven firefighters from Mona, in addition to three Bureau of Land Management fire trucks worked seven hours to keep the fire contained to 200 acres. The opportunity is upcoming, with the last filing date for municipal offices in Ephraim, Manti and Sterling September 25. Manti and Ephraim still have the old fashioned way of selecting candidates. They choose them at party caucuses. And Sterling does it at a town meeting. Those venues do not have primary elections. (The filing date for towns that do have primaries is past, it was August 22.) In Ephraim the fouryearterms Mark Anderson and Barry of Baker, both Republicans, and Cliff Birrell, Democrat, will be available. Mr. Anderson, who will be completing his second, though not consecutive, term says hell not be a candidate for another term. Mr. Birrell and Baker have not officially declared themselves. Will there be a third party candidate? Its happened before in Ephraim. Near miss Airplane crashes, barely misses SV Hospital, pilot, 2 passengers injured Shortly after taking off from the Mt. Pleasant airport, a small private airplane narrowly missed two hazardous storage tanks and the Sanpete Valley Hospital to crash land 30 yards to the south of the hospital. The crash, which occurred at about 8:20 p.m., Sunday night, knocked out power to the hospital during the only quiet time in an otherwise busy holiday weekend at the Emergency Room. There was .an initial fear that sparks from the electrical lines would ignite spilled fuel, exploding the fuel tanks on the plane, the oxygen tanks which were only 5 yards from w here the plane came to rest, and the propane tanks, only 20 yards from the crash site. The pilot and all three passengers were hurt; the pilot, Tracy Woodbury of Logan was the most seriously hurt with head trauma and other injuries. He was transported to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center (UVRMC) as an intensive care patient. 1 le has now been upgraded to fair condition. 1 Randall Larsen of Spanish Fork and Jared Blauer of Bountiful were also transported to UVRMC with serious injuries requiring orthopedics and plastic surgery. Jareds wife, Karen Blauer remained at Sanpete Valley Hospital for observation after receiving bruises and a concussion. She was released on Monday. Manti will have four Council positions to fill at the November general election. They re now held by Kay Peterson, a Democrat, and Galen Christiansen, Barbara Wintch and Mary Anderson, Republicans. Sterling is unique in several ways one way is the manner in which it elects members of the Tow n Board. The method is nonpartisan and it doesnt involve a primary.
