Show TEMPLAR TRUMPET, DECEMBER 17, 1998 PAGE 2 r Mr. Petersen ' ing on Speaks Out I wanted to compliment MHS students at Christmas time for their involvement in service It's impressive to sec how of some of the things going MHS students right now volunteer to sene in City Youth Councils, or as tutors in the Study Buddies program, as friends or entertainers at local nursing homes, and to help patients at hospitals Many of them made pinatas for the festival and help with landscaping on public buildings Many serve as coaches or officials for youth sports and help with programs Many also help with food and clothing drives and put hundreds of hours in restoration of the old Manti City I lall and fundraising for a Manti pool and Ephraim skateboard park. Students also assist with people wonder what kind of gifts to give, but I'm not aware of a more meaningful gift than to give one's own time to others Have an enjoyable Holiday Season and take time to help someone else SBO ta many students give freely of their time and energy in trying to make things better in our school and community. I'm sure I don't know of all the ways stuI dents serve, and hesitate to even mention the ones I do know because many students wish to remain anonomous. I hope that you all get that one special gift you have been wishing for Above all. hope all of us will find the great feeling that comes from giv mg rather than receiving Im not talking about big. expensive gifts, but the little ones that don't cost anything, yet they mean the most All of us need to be appreciated, noticed, and valued. Wc need others to see our 1 of a touch, a kind word, a snnlc. an honest compliment, a listening ear. or the smallest act of caring These simple gestures can make a bad day better, a lonely day tolerable, and Manti High School better than it already is So this year, try to look ' die getting' and give a little past bit of yourself Take yourself beyond your comfort zone and make a new friend Build a mend a broken bridge and friendship If you do this, you just might feel that little warm feeling that everyone is always talking about strengths and overlook our adult literacy programs and serve on the child abuse prevention team and many more. Merry Christmas!!! ever-anno- Counselor's Corner By: Natasha Madsen We have completed the sophomore Student Education Occupation Plan (SEOP) visits with students and parents and plan on meeting with the freshman stu- high school juniors and seniors a 3.25 GPA or vocational students a 2.5 GPA. the class is free. They will rccicv c 3 semester . hours of college art credit and vv ill start on January 1th. This class is open to other interested people but they will be required to pay standard tuition fees BYU is offering several college preparation . classes. This program is called w ho have 1 dents and their parents in January. Students who arc taking (he ACT test February 6th need to meet the January 4th registration deadline. Tlut fee is $2 1 .(X). Snow College will be the site of the testing The next ACT test at Manti High School will be on April 10th. Opportunities available include Southern Utah University is offering an ART 101 internet class For SOAR. Tlicrc will be 5 summer sessions. each costing $135 00. They will cover Act test prep. BYU admission procedures, college training, and career inventory and interpretation The first sesson starts June 2Kth to July work-shopsa- 3rd, and the last is July 26th to the 3 1st. We have received the National FFA College Scholarship Program.
