Show SunGunnison Valley News Wednesday. June Salina What parents should know Take precautions to avoid Hantavirus about date rape by Diane O. Hendrickson, Nl.S. Rape Crisis Program Coordinator Some parents may sometimes feel that theirs is the only family having problems with dating violence, but in reality, many teenagers have problems with violence in a relationship with a boy friend or girlfriend. Surveys of students in high schools and colleges all over the Untied States have led researchers to estimate that 28 percent of students experience physical violence in a dating relationship. Studies on date rape also indicate that of the percent of women raped by someone they know, 67 percent were assaulted in a dating situation. Dating violence happens everywhere and to all kinds of people. There is no particular culture or community in which it occurs or does not occur. Dating violence is serious. The po- -j tential for murder is present in every violent relationship. According to the FBI, 20 percent of homicide victims are between the ages of 5 and 24. One out of every three women murdered in the United States is killed by a hus- band or boyfriend. Even an abusive boyfriend who does not intend to kill his girlfriend can accidentally kill her with hard shoves or threats with a 80-pl- weapon. With the spring and summer cleaning of garages, cabins and campers comes the increased possibility of relationships. In a violent intimate relationship, a person repeatedly: I ) uses or threatens to use physical force against the other, 2) verbally attacks or demeans or humiliates the other tocontrol her or him, andor 3) forces or coerces the other to participate in sexual acts. It is not the same as getting angry or having a fight. In an abusive relationship, it happens again and again one person isafraidofand intimidated by the other. Sexual abuse is mistreatment by sexual acts, demands or insults. Your daughter may have been violently forced to have sex, or she may have been coerced or manipulated into having sex. She has been coerced if she has been afraid to say no because she is afraid of being rejected, humiliated or beaten-ac- ts which, if committed within a relationship are as illegal as w hen committed by a stranger. If you or someone you know is in an abusive andor violent dating relationship. encourage him or her to seek help. "There have been seven identified cases of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome in the intermountain west area already this year. The four cases of HPS in New Mexico have all proven fatal. The other three victims, two in Arizona and one in Idaho, have survived," reported Resendes. "Hantavirus is spread by rodents to humans. The Hantavirus presence worsensaftermildw intersand wetter than usual springs. With greater than normal rainfall this spring, the rodent population will likely increase, added Resendes. Hantavirus infection, though rare, is quite deadly, w iih about a 50 percent mortality rate. How-- ! ever, the great majority of abusers are young men, and their vicli ms are young women. The social tolerance for boys to be aggressive towards girls seems to make it far more common for boys to be violent. Girls who victimize their boyfriends are less likely to be emotionally or verbally abusive, and boys are more likely to use threats of or actual physical violence. Girls are less likely to inflict severe injuries, but abuse inflicted by girls can be intimidating, and boys can be afraid to displease or make their girlfriends angry. Several studies have reported that young men are more violent when they begin to view themselves as part of a couple. Abusers will often become more violent when they think their relationship is going to end or after their girlfriend or boyfriend breaks up with them, making the chance of being seriously injured or killed higher when the victim decides to break up the relationship. This makes breaking up frightening for the victim, w ho may try to break up (and then get back together) several times before actually ending the relationship. Many of the victims of dating violence believe that their partner's vio- lence is a sign of love. The violent partner seems to accept violence as a means to obtain a desired goal, for example, to frighten or"intimidate or to force the other person to give me something. Violence is seen as tolerable, or as normal, in some dating 24-ho- Forest supervisor extends comment period on timber sale Based on requests, the acting forest supervisor has decided to extend the comment period for the South Manti Timber Salvage Draft Environmental Impact Statement until July 21, 1999.
