Show Thursday, August 12, 1999 rF'PT zaB.:aa A Spider Wars Messenger-Enterpris- Page e m 3 Finlinson - Larsen By Beverly Call A few days ago I was cleaning my kitchen when my daughter came screaming down the hall after finding a big spider among ld her coloring books. I tried to calm her by making light of the situation, It cant bethat I then said, big" swallowing hard, fighting back the panic I continued. are Spiders perfectly harmless honey." She wasnt buying it. She frantishook her head, No Mom, it looks like this! she exclaimed as she cally indicated its size with her thumb and forefinger, making a circle the size of a quarter. Come see" she then bade me. Shed called my bluff. I flinched at her invitation as if Id been slapped. She actually wanted me to see it. There was no way I was going to take the chance of being pounced on by the monster while walking into her room. Im not going in there! I wailed. And that is when I realized I had completed my responsibilities as a mother, quite early too. Like my grand mother and mother before me I had successfully passed my neurosis on to my posterity. Actually, I come from a long line of Arachnaphobics. My great great grandmother on my mothers side once battled one of the beasts with nothing more than a wooden rug beater. She barely survived the ordeaj, but she was never the same. Until the day she died she insisted that the entire spider population would one day rise up against humankind and take over the world. As children my brothers carried the heavy responsibility of spider terminators. Whenever Mom screamed we all knew shed seen a spider. The boys would stride bravely into the room to find her standing on the tallest piece of furniture available and pointing out the location of the intruder while screaming, Its over there! Kill it, Mom was certain spiders could smell your fear" and would actually seek her out just for the sheer pleasure of torturing her. Her one struggle with an arachnid turned out not to be a spider at all. One day Mom was alone and decided the basement needed a good cleaning. She began sweeping under the couch when the broom hit a giant rubber spider that belonged to one of my brothers. As it bounced along the cement floor it seemed to jump out at her and she lost it Her sure rial instincts took over as she relentlessly beat the poor thing with her broom while screaming uncontrollably. By the time she realized it was nothing more than a toy the only thing left to identify it were the rubber legs. So now my time had come. I knew that inevitably I would have to face my mortal struggle with the enemy. My first instinct was to pass the son in, armed with a wad of toilet paper w ith buck. I sent my orders to catch the beast, drown it in the toilet and then report back to me. He returned much sooner than expected, No way Mom, he said, handing me the tissue. Its waaay too big. It was as I had feared. This was no spider, it was an animal. My next tactic was to call my husband at work. I dont like to disturb him usually but this was a matter of life or death. Daid, I whispered frantically into the phone (I didn't want the spider to know' I was calling in reinforcements) I need you to come home right away. Theres a huge spider in A.J.s room and youve got to kill it! A spider? he asks, You want me to come home to kill a spider? Honey, Im working. Why dontyou kill it? I cant kill it! I was nearing panic at this point, Its too big! How big can It be? Its a spider. Well, I dont actually know, I havent seen it yet" I admitted a bit sheepishly, but A.J. says its the size of a silver dollar!" (Inflation you know). Honey, you have got to learn how to take care of these things yourself. I cant come home. Now I began to cry, Oh fine! I yell hysterically through my tears, Leave us here alone, but youll be sorry. When you come home and we are nothing more than hollowed-ou- t shells dont blame me! Then I slammed the phone down. As the last bit of my sanity dangled from a thread I looked into the trusting eyes of my children and knew I had a mission. The safety and tranquility of my home was being threatened and preserving it was up to me alone. I herded the children outside with orders not to come back into the house until I came to get them. I then turned to meet my destiny. First, Id need some sort of body armor and weapons. I scrambled around the house collecting my instruments of war then locked myself in the bathroom to suit up. Wader boots? Check. Ski parka? Check. Hockey mask? Bicycle helmet? Check. As I snapped my rubber gloves into place a faint rumble vibrated through the house and my attention was drawn to the gentle ripples in the toilet water. Impact tremor I whispered to myself, but this was no mere dinosaur, I wasnt that lucky. Armed with an industrial strength can of Raid in one hand, Daves tennis racquet in the other I crept quietly out of the bathroom and approached the bedroom door. Summoning every ounce on courage I possessed I kicked the door in with a and stood at the threshold poised for battle. The beast was there all right with all 12 of its eyes honed in on V Holley - Thompson vy. & ns?? You feelin lucky punk?" I asked with a sneer. Then I let out a warrior princess wail to shake the rafters. I dove into the room and rolled across the floor swinging my racquet all the way. When I got to my feet I landed a Power Ranger kick to the monster right between the eyes. He didnt know what hit him. I thmsted, I parried. I used a backhand then a forehand and then with an overhead smash I vanquished my enemy. Determined to show no mercy I screamed Die! Die! Die! all the while spraying the body with Raid, creating a five-inc- h mountain of foam on the floor. After performing the ritual victory dance around my fallen adversary I placed a cup over the corpse to await disposal when David got home. Sw eeping my mask and helmet off I was moved to remembrance of the brave women who had gone before me, and I knew that I had just added my own page to my familys history that would inspire young girls for generations to come.
