Show impaired find savior George Robert Everhart Willard Robert (Bob) Anderson, 56 CLEARFIELD George Robert EverAf hart Tuesday, May 10. 19 enecict s Hospital in Ogden ‘He was born Apnil 4, 1919 in Akron Ohio. a son of Doyle and Elizabeth Pouiter Evernart Kmight-Ridder Newspapers SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — Confused about all those high-tech doodads on your personal computer? So was Mia Farrow. Intimidated by all that uppity computer-speak like ROM and RAMand bits and bytes? Carly Siee SA | ecm ehNaeaT INEeaRIRE YT i, ete mon felt that way, too. So they turned to David Pogue, a 31-year-old Shaker Heights native. As more and more computer virgins venture into the uncharted waters of cyberspace, more and more people turn to Pogue, who has made a cottage industry out of soothing people’s fears. His first book, “Macs for Dummies,” became the top-selling how-to computer guide in the coun- try because of its conversational style and detailed hands-on instructions for even the simplest of tasks. (The first chapter is titled “Howto Turn on Your Mac — and What to Do Next.”) It has sold 600,000 copies worldwide and has been trans- lated into 15 languages. The sequel, “More Macs for Dummies,” is due in area stores next week. _ “WhatI do is far more psycholog- ical than instructional,” Pogue said. “I make house calls and say, ‘Everybodygets confused bythat.’ It’s very reassuring.” Pogue knowsthis as fact. He’s been there. It hasn’t even been 10 years since he first touched a computer. And Sheet A a re nateagepanaapne he has yet to work on an IBMor IBM-clone. These days, in addition to writing the how-to books, Pogue writes a monthly column tor Macworld magazine and is working on his second novel, which he says is free from computer involvement. Pogue’s first novel, “Hard Drive,” was a successful paperback thriller about a computer virus that grows out of control. Last month, 20th Century Fox purchased the option on turning the novel into a film. While all that writing would seem like a full-time career, Pogue, who now lives in NewYork City, said he spends even more time as a computer consultant to the stars. His $75-an-hour consulting business is booming through recommendations and inquiries from those who have heard of his client list. For example, Pogue set up a sim- ple Macintosh system for Farrow so she could write her long-awaited tell-all autobiography on a computef: Pogue regularly makes housecalls for composer Stephen Sondheim, who has put all his lyrics and correspondence on the Macintosh. “He’s also really big into games,” Pogue added. Pogue took author and famous screenplay writer William Goldman — known best for “All the President’s Men,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “Misery” — from a manual typewriter to a Macintosh. “He never even had anelectric typewriter,” Pogue said. “My toughest task was to keep him from smashing the keys to smithereens.” What Pogue did for his well-known clients, he does for the public through his magazine column and his how-to books. All this finances his dream of composing and conducting, a dream he also follows. “I wanted to be a Broadwaycon- ductor,” Pogue said. “But there was about as much need for that as there was for... asbestos.” Top 10 quotes from ‘Macs for Dummies’ Knight-Ridder Newspapers 10. You often hear computer jocks talk about megs. Onlyrarely are theyreferring to Meg Ryan and Meg Tilly. Meg is short for megabyte, a unit of memoryor storage capacity. 9. You may occasionally hear cocky teenagers tell you to “boot up.” No, they're not taking you fly-fishing. That’s computerese for turning on the Mac. 8. If you have a PowerBook (a portable computer), you don’t have a mouse. Studies have shown that rolling a gray, soap-sized plastic box across the thigh of the guy next to you on theairplane can have — ergonomically and socially speaking -—— unpleasant results. ‘ 7. | hope you're seated for this chapter. In fact, | hope you're leaning way back with yourfeet up and a daiquiri in your hand. 6. Without a disk, the Macis like someonewith a completely hollow skull (and we'veall met that type), 5. Nothing you do with the mouse and keyboard can physically harm the computer. 4, You can't break the computer by playing around. 3. A program never changes, It's like a Cuisinart on your kitchen counter, Documents are what you create with a program — they're the cole slaw, crushed nuts and guacamole dip 2.
