If you read last weeks column, you JANE CARPENTER recall that I started telling you how much fun it was to make a quilt. I got so enthused while doing some brushing up on the techniques that I got my last unfinished quilt out of the cedar chest and started working on it again. will It is called a garden quilt and is made from six sided pieces sewn together to make circles that resemble the blossoms of flowers. It is a common Recipes From Home Parmesan Puffs on Toast In a bowl, add as much Parmesan cheese to one cup of mayonaise as you : like. The mixture should not have a mayonaise flavor. Add 4 green onions . thinly sliced and mix well. Place heaping teaspoon of the cheese mixture on toasted bread rounds. . Place under the broiler and serve when it becomes bubbly and golden brown. MARY LEE VOSS pattern so many of you may have seen or made one yourself. On resuming work on it, I remembered one important tip about sewing the pieces together. You do not sew clear to the edge of the pieces, but stop at the depth of the seam. This allows you to sew points together without all the bulk that can result if you sew a seam over a seam. I remember the first diamond shapes I tried to piece and how some seemed larger than the others when I was finished. This was because I did not allow for the corner seams. Also I did not press the pieces as I went. The result was that some pieces were the depth of the seam larger (or smaller) than the others. I would suggest that if you are just starting to make a quilt, you choose a pattern that uses squares or rectangles. These allow you to see if your seams match easily. There are some very pretty patterns such as the Log Cabin that can be made in earth tones and are just beautiful. Also, this pattern is easily adapted to piecing on the machine and can be made much faster than a hand sewn quilt. Also this pattern can be used to piece knit fabrics and makes a beautiful comforter. If you make a comforter, you can tie the quilt instead of quilting it and it does not take as long to finish it. Hand quilting is what makes a quilt unique, however. This is done either by sewing around each piece by hand or using a template to help you mark a pattern for sewing. If, when you were choosing a quilt pattern, you looked through some quilt magazines or books, Im sure you saw the quilting designs that use templates for marking. These are traces on the top of the quilt and then sewn with small, even stitches with quilting thread, once you have basted the batting and back material to the finished quilt top. Speaking of basting the three parts of the quilt together, this is done by laying the three pieces on top of each other in the middle of the floor (that was the only space I could ever find that was big enough). a quilting frame, by all means basting, always I if you have the room, I feel it will pay off in the long run. Well, I havent gone into all the things that are involved in making a quilt'. But if I have interested you enough to at least get you to do some serious do more working from the center out. These are long, loose stitches and are removed when the quilt is done. I remove them as I go along, because sometimes when I am quilting, I stitch into them and they are difficult fo remove. You will learn by experiece which is best for you. Just be careful not to pull the quilt when you remove the basting stitches. I always use quilting thread that is made especially for quilting because it is waxed and is easy to thread into the very fine needles. It is a very good grade of thread and if I am going to put that much work into something I want to use thread that will last. Once you have your quilt basted, it is time to mount it on a quilting frame. There are several kinds, but I would suggest that you not try what is called a large embroidery hoop. A quilt is much too bulky and difficult to hold on your lap to work on. Also, I have found that it is almost impossible for me to keep the quilt from pulling out of shape using one of these hoops. Maybe some of you have used them and had good results, but for me I prefer a quilting frame. It does take quite a bit of space in your house to set one of these up, but if Starting at the middle of the quilt, you first baste to the edge on the right and then on the left, then from the center to the top and from the center to the bottom. I then also baste from the center to each corner for additional support. If you feel that more basting would ensure that you would not pull the quilt out of shape once you get it mounted on thinking about trying to make one, then V, I will be satisfied. 1 If I can be of any help to any of you, please feel free to write and ask nje. I will try to help in any way I can. I have spent many enjoyable hours quilting and I think if you ever seriously get pne started, you will find it very satisfy&ig. V Next week, I hope to have some research done on several consumer reports regarding canned foods. I think you might be surprised to learn how some of your favorite brands rate as far as nutritional rating, calories, food value, etc. That is one of the enjoyable side features of writing this column. In trying to bring you information that will be of value to you, I learn more and more on what constitutes a good buy. So keep couponing and refunding and each week I will try to include some consumer report information that you will be interested in. See you next week. Natural gas, characteristically, has no odor. Nor is it poisonous. But because it replaces the oxygen in enclosed spaces, much like water replaces air in a bottle, a great quantity of natural gas leaking into a persons home could cause suffocation. For this reason and because natural gas is inflammable, we add pungent chemicals, the odor of which enables us to detect the presence of natural gas. The following are procedures you should follow should you detect the presence of natural gas in your home. Its important not to let the butter become too soft before you work with it or you may have to add more flour, which cuts down on the tenderness. Cut the stick of butter into squares, and it will cream quickly. When sauteeing with butter, keep the heat low so butter doesnt burn. Keeping the heat low also prevents the sauteed food from shrinking too much. When you see the term, clarified butter, do you know how its made and when its used? Melt butter over very low heat in a heavy saucepan. The fat rises and milk solids' settle on the bottom. Remove the white froth as it forms on top.
