Jeanne Layton, director of libraries for Davis County, reported to the Davis County Library Board last week and gave them the 1980 annual report. Same Man Might Have Robbed Again second Roy bank was robbed Tuesday, and police suspect the same person who hit a Roy bank just under a month ago. ROY STANDING EMPTY since the disincorporation of East Layton City in January, the former city hall building may Future of Old City Hall Studied an interest in renting parts of the building, but they couldnt use the whole thing, Shields said. And, the longer it remains closed, the more chance there will be for vandals to cause damage. I think a senior citizens center would be a good use for the building, and a number of people have expressed that to me, Sill said. By DR. ETTA The building has been closed since Councilman Lynn Wood suggested that the building be used for other groups, as well as senior citizens. He recommended that the building be turned over to the Layton Parks and Recreation Commission to be used for recreational activities for all ages. The cats have abdominal pain and will cry, especially if handled. If the animal vomits or has diarrhea they become severely dehydrated. If the cat is pregnant the kittens may abort, be stillborn, or die just a few hours after birth. If the cat was sick early in her pregnancy the kittens may be alive but shake and have difficulty walking this will be because of brain damage and is a permanent condition. Cats with FPL do not have runny noses or eyes unless they also have a separate upper respiratory disease caused by another virus. Veterinary care increases the cats chances of survival greatly. The earlier the treatment starts the better the chance of survival. The signs of Upper Respiratory Disease (URD) have already been refered to. In the mildest form the cat may just sneeze for a few days. Others will also have a fever and stop eating. Commonly the eyes and nose will have a discharge. Some cats will also drool due to ulcers on the tongue which cause painful swallowing. These cats can become very depressed and if the lack of appetite continues the weight loss is very severe. This depression and loss of appetite can continue three weeks or longer. A secondary pneumonia can become very severe and cause difficulty breathing. Again this disease is usually more serious in a young kitten. As with FPL the earlier veterinary care is started the less serious the disease will be. Annual vaccinations are needed to prevent both FPL and URD. , . Art, Crafts Class Scheduled The suspect entered First Security Bank, 1995 W. 5600 S., at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday and approached a teller. He had an unknown caliber hand gun with which he demanded the teller empty her cash drawer and give him the money, the police report said. According to the report, the man fled the scene through a parking lot located south of the bank on foot with an undetermined amount of cash. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5 foot 8, medium with redish-brow- n build, in his mid-30hair. s, The police said no arrests have been made and there are no suspects at this time. 2nd INCOME SEMINAR ' MICHELSON The diseases that a cat can be vaccinated for are Feline Panleukoponia (cat distemper) Feline Upper Respiratory Disease, and Rabies. The first two diseases are fairly common and can be very serious.. Both FLP (Feline Panleukoponia) and URD (Feline Upper Respiratory Disease) can be vaccinated for with one combination shot. Rabies is a public health problem and will be discussed later. . Kittens should receive their first vaccinations at 8 weeks of age, and a booster at 12 weeks. When you take your kitten in for the first vaccinations take a sample of the stool with you. Only one or two teaspoons full are needed. By using what is called a the veterinarian can fecal flotation method determine if the kitten has intestinal parasites. These parasites or worms are not visible in the stool but by using a microscope the eggs of the parasites can be found. Once it is known what type of parasites the kitten has, the proper medication can be given. - Feline Panleukoponia (FPL) is the first of the two diseases we will discuss. The term cat distemper is misleading as the signs are very different from dog Dog distemper usually shows distemper. respiratory signs including a runny nose and pneumonia, while FPL usually affects mainly the digestive system. - FPL is very contagious. It is caused by a virus in the parvo-viru- s group. This virus is very stable and : will remain infectious at room temperature for a year or more. So even without direct contact with an injected animal a cat can catch the disease, by being .where a cat who had the disease a year ago was. The incubation period, or time between exposure and signs is from 2 to 10 days usually 5 to 7. 90 of age who months cats 6 less more of or than .percent get the disease will die. Older cats may be more resistent but 50 to 60 percent may still die from FPL. r Young kittens may die so quickly that the owner does not have time to realize the kitten is ill. The kitten is Soften found dead in the morning with the comment But he was fine last night when we went to bed. ' This is most common in very young (8 to 10 week old) - kittens. t- - The initial sign is fever of 104 degrees to 105 degrees F. (normal is 100.5degrees to 102 degrees F.). The cat appears profoundly depressed and may just drop his head between his paws. The appetite is completely gone in about 48 hours or less although the cat may ;stiU desire water. They will often lie near the water dish. Many cats during this phase will begin to vomit. - If the patient survives this first period, diarrhea will develop. The feces will be liquid and dark (or yellow) and will often have blood mixed in with it. . East Layton was disincorporated and became part of Layton City last month. The library added about 9,500 books in 1980 to its collection but Ms. Layton said they also discarded about 4,500 which were either worn out or the information in them was no longer valid. The report showed salaries amounted to $475,058 of the total expenditures of $736,361 In 1980. Ms. Layton said this figure was down slightly because of a reduction in staff of about 1V2 persons in 1980. The county library system currently e has 20 employees and 16 part-tim- e employees. The library issued 12,591 new library full-tim- cards and had 33,275 registered jxnrows during the last year. Detective Doug Rochelle of the Roy Police Department said, We feel this suspect is the same one who hit the Bank of Utah on the 5th (of February). become a senior citizen center, if one Layton councilman has his way. May Be Used for Senior Citizens - LAYTON At least one city councilman in Layton thinks senior citizens in the city should have their own meeting place, and he thinks the former East. Layton city hall would fit the bill. Councilman Golden Sill made the suggestion at a recent council meeting, and he got some support for the idea from Mayor Lewis G. Shields. Some youth groups have expressed A Of the nearly half million items loaned in 1980, 40 percent went through the bookmobile service. This service is being threatened by possible cuts in the state funds used in providing the service, she said. Ms. Layton said the countys library system has 159,972 items on hand which figures to about 1 item per person in the county. The value of the countys collection is estimated at nearly $2 million, and Ms. Layton Said this is a conservative figure which uses $12 per item to determine the amount. The countys library system has the main library in Farmington and two branch libraries located in Gearfield and Bountiful. The library board is SMALL INVESTMENTTRAINING, GREAT FUTURE.
