Show rwv W WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL. AUGUST 24, 1978 Laylon Features Returning Backs Schools Nave SL By Football Advantage By DA E VllGHAM After talking to a lot of h'gh school football coaches throughout the valley one point that stands out in ths reporters eves over all the rest is that w ith the exception of maybe Davis High the Salt Lake si hoots have an ad vantage over the county schools in football THE REASON for this is really two fold I irst of all the little league football program is run according to high school boundaries and secondly all the Sad Lake schools have ninth graders at their school The Wasatch Front Football league do a good job out heie m the county but in the other city it is run a different way Out here in the WTFL the teams are selected according to ability and weight, geographic locations are yery seldom considered Sure the kids in West Bountiful plav in their league, Centerville has theirs as does Bountiful, but that's about the extent of boundaries placed on a kid IN SALT Lake the kids sign up at the high school in their area, the one they would be attending if they were that age This means that kids living in the same area play on the same team By the time these kids are seniors in high school they could have been plavirg lootball together for about nine or so vears Out here the teams are usually not the same from one vear to another The top notched kids plav on the A team with the others dispersed to as many other clubs as needed It's possible for a placer to be on a different team every year THEN TOO, the city is divided mo two h gh schools and kids that will be attending both schools are on (he same teams This isn't to say that one method is better than the other, it's just pointing out that when you interview a player at a Salt Lake school they usually ail indicate they have been playing together for about eight years THE NINTH graders bring up another interesting point That gives those players an extra year over the other schools to learn the system Davis has that txtra year over Bountiful or Viewmont in teaching their of fense Kids around the county have to learn the system at their respective junior high schools then as sophomores they get to learn an entirely different system all over again IT WOULDNT be fair to ask the junior high coaches to run the same system as the high schools In fact at Bountiful junior it would be impossible because some of their players go to both Bountiful and Viewmont W'lth the little league arranging their boundaries m accordance with the high schools and that extra year of freshmen at the school one would have to agree that the re might be a slight advantage in the Salt Lake schools Football Fever High At Woods By DAVE WIGHAM WOODS CROSS - root ball fever is running high at the Wildcat school and with all their players returning for their senior campaigns everyone is optimistic THE CATS went through their rookie effort in varsity competition with few wins but a lot of experience Sending juniors into Region Four last year was like sending the into the college All-Sta- NFL Coach Wally Hawkins has about 60 players in camp this week many of whom have gained in both size and ma "1 cant believe the turity difference seniors make, these kids are ready to plav and have a great attitude HEADING THE list of b g people is senior tight end John Montgomery who tips the scales around the 200 mark John was interior lineman last year but will be moved to the tight end spot Doug Burrell, a 6 foot 2 inch 230 pounder is )4 back and ready to cause trouble m the line play Other seniors who will see some action include Kevin Klitguard, Todd Allen, Greg Butters and Andy Boehme All have gixid size and speed and learned how to play the hard way last year A couple juniors, Jason U hitney and Mark Tate, will be pushing the upjierclassmen for a spot of on the line Running backs look to be a strong point for the Cats with four seniors and two juniors fighting it out tor the starting nod Jeff Ostler, Dave Poweil, Stu F gan and Wes Mochizuki are all returning seniors while Mike Brinkerhoff and Donaldson are hungry juniors waiting for action THE QUARTERBACK bat tie looks to be a two man rate be'ween senior Todd Bailiff and junior Mark Farnshaw Both will probably see action at the helm of the Wildcats as both are good leaders When the ball hits the air wavs the Cats have some good people on the receiving end Don DAE WIGHAM LAYTON - Generally it would be considered imjxysxi-bl- e by most to improve on the season the Layton Lancers had last year in football but quite possibly the lancers will do that this season LED BY a big strong line the Layton club hxks to be as good as they were last vear, if not better Sure they lost a lot of good placers ke Maurice Turner, Ben Bubuk, Rick Snow, Wane kittrell, Sam Gallegos and otrers but they also have some great ones return. ng like Chuck Fhin, Brandon Him, Todd Staplev to name a h w THF BIGGEST, literally, asset going for the Lancers light now is the fact that they have five linemen returning that saw a lot of at lion las! season In fact these five were starters at one time or another last year It was these people that helped the lamtis win the region title, tad with Boun tiful but since thc biat the Braves thev went as number one, and it is thest pt ople that will again be the nucleus of the attack Victorious in region placed! was the saw considerable playing time on both offense and dt ftnse a vear ago and know the L ancer system inside out This time last season the football fur tunes of Clearfield weie turned over to Brent Hancoc k The timing might not have been the best in the world but the decision has turned out to be a good one for the Falcon sc hool IN HIS first vear C muck guided the Falcons r ms for k oac h a b the coaches THE KEY to the I am er team this year is at the quar terback spot where senior Tracy Chatwm is currently winning the starting battle over three juniors Mark Vigil, Kurt Kennidy and Jim Siekera are in the background at the signal caller spot but their presence is just enough to keep Tracy working hard A gixid passer Senior Gregg Tuttle has moved to a wide receiver which gives him a chance to show off his speed Another senior Paul Waite, ai cording to the coat hes, has exfemely good hands and catches anything thrown near him Pay Peace and Taylor World are two more seniors who should see considerable play ing time Juniors Reed Call and Taryn Hallows are also slated for action DEFENSIVELY THE lineman will more than likely be some of the offensiye people wholl go both ways At linebackers for the Cats will be Stu Lgan and Powell Both have experience and are good at what they do, ready to bac k up these seniors will be juniors Don Donaldson, Jeff Lewis, Whitney and Tate The secondary is headed up by a trio of seniors and a junior, Todd Bailiff, Wes Mochizuki and Ostler could all sot actum as could Farnshaw WOODS Mark junior CROSS has a good club corning back with the capability of becoming a great club The Cats started off in great tradition regard ing sports last year and will be out to better themselves in this their second vear Word around the league is that the Woods Cross club could be a dark horse and one to watch come state time and prove their abilitn s Siekera could also see action at a slot back pos turn the past years the Lancers have come up with some great lim backers who stem to be near the top in every code he s all region ballot and the year the lav In ton crew have some gtxid ones again RON COOPFR is leading the group right now followed by Dave Burke and (oc'kie Carter Todd Staplev could plav at a backer spot depend ing on how well his knee holds up while running the football Waller heads up a group fighting for the starting role m the defensive secondary but right behind is C arnron V igil and junior Tim Fee les ton Tim is probably the f s test player on the team and comes from a family of foot bail players THIS GROLP of seniors won all their games as sophomores, then lost only o Bountiful last vear in the junior varsity ranks so tie v know what it takes to w in Ihey have played togethc r foi a long time and have set the state championship as th ir goal Barring injuries to ktv personnel the Lancers would have to be considered a strong football club k last season was that Kenneth Bairds In Military on tl e Casey, are1 a couple of running backs who saw action last season in Todd Stapley and Art Leota Staplev was the starting fullback while leota came on strong in the state tournament when T urner was injured Todd is a hard runner who 11 get the tough yards while leota has gixxi speed to the outside Dave Adams and Dave Burke will be pushing for some playing time and bo'h are considered gixid b icks b u LJ2
