ORANGE IT S A THORNY JOB By ROSELYN KIRK Although Kathy Elliott says blackberry picking isnt as good as usual because of the , drought, she went out Monday to pick some wild blackberries to make pies and jam for her family. KATHY says she first began picking blackberries as a child when she would go in- to the mountains in Idaho with her family to find the berries. There are not many blackberries in this area, she says, but every year she gets permission from friends Margaret and Otis Roper, 1605 So. 200 East, Farmington to pick on their property. Usually some of Kathys family or her husband Ross helps with the picking project, but this year she went alone. She said, because of the poor blackberry crop, she will probably be able to make only one pie and preserve five bottles of jam for her family. She says the berries are sparse this year because of the drought. devoured about two dozen jars of blackberry jam, so Kathy attempted to pick more berries to replenish the stock since the family ate every last jar of jam. Blackberry picking is not easy, according to Kathy, since blackberry bushes, like rose bushes, have thorns. She dresses in a long sleeved jacket and long pants and covers her left hand with a glove. OR WIDE USER OF YOUR TIME? Old Ben Franklin was surely wiser than ever in these three words of advice he gave us with typical economy and brevity: Time is money. But Id say hes wrong. Time is more valuable than money. Id rate time the most precious asset in life, yours or mine. While money can be earned or spent, saved or wasted, is time ir Yet replaceable. time, and how we use it, is one of the least understood subjects in the a world. Everybody claims they try to save time, usually by rushing through life without pausing to savor what should be enjoyed and without discerning what should be passed over. Isnt it strange that as soon as folks retire, they begin trying to figure out what to do with all the time they have rushed through life trying to save? A college professor named John P. Robinson has finally given us some careful statistics on the subject. Hes written a scholarly book entitled How Use Americans Time (Prager York New Publishers, City). includes research a Robinsons national sampling of 2,000 individuals who each kepi a detailed log of a single days activities. Some of Professor Robinsons findings are revealing. About women and housework, for example. Housework was cited most often as the least enjoyable aspect of their daily lives it consumes up to half of hours of most women. Contrary to accepted reports that Americans spend an average of six Qours a day watching TV, Robinson says that his survey shows most people have a total of only five hours of free time available on the average in a single day. I think the figure refers to the amount of time the TV set may be on in a household, not how much time the individual spends with it, the professor declares. He points out that, in contrast with his, other surveys do not measure the simultaneous activities that people may engage in such as doing the ironing, watching TV, and preparing lunch for the kids coming home from school. Robinson believes that Americans should begin to budget their expenditures of the clock and the calendar much more carefully. He suggests that people ought to intermix work and leisure - such as working for five years and going to school or traveling for a year, rather than lumping retirement time all in the declining years. How about your time? Have you ever looked carefully at one days or one years expenditure of it? Do you spend each day as carefully as you write a check? Remember, this checking account is irreplaceable. One of the few instances where time works for you is with a savings account or a certificate of deposit at our place. Compounded interest can zoom your savings while you sleep. Its the equivalent of doing two job at once. In this case, time is money - yours! ut non-sleepin- g six-ho- EZRA T. Until that information is stored on the disc, no other expansion of the computer is planned. As the system expands, Mr. Walker said that plans are to have terminals in seven departments so that material stored in the computer will be accessible to each department. Additional terminals will cost around $4,500 each, he estimated. THE planning office said that department would be anxious to use information, that will be stored on the discs, for the tax evaluation notices. This would allow them to upgrade the planning maps and the geographic base file. Chris Schaefer, planning expert, is attempting to organize planning information into block groups to provide instant information to the planning office at the touch of a button. The planning office said this type of information will also be helpful to the Davis County Housing Authority. Some federal funding may be available to organize the material, which can be fed into the computer at a later HAYS IIETJ MILO SIRLOIN TIP 12 oz. HORMEL simfiis $H4? HORMEL IVi LB. CfO) KYM said. MR. Schaefer said the DIME file will be complete by January. Until the county computer capacity is expand- ed, this information can be analyzed by renting computer time in Salt Lake City. Mr. Walker said that in addition to getting the tax information on the computer disc, that the county is considering a new serial numbering system for property. It will take about three to four months to include this information on the disc and currently space to allow that change is being reserved. MR. WALKER said presently the computer does not have the capacity to store more information. In order to make that possible, the county will need to buy an additional disc pack, which would double the storing capacity of the present computer. Thayne Corbridge, county assessor, said that tax evaluation information will be subject to change in 1979 when each parcel has to be reappraised. Reappraisal is required every five years. THE county plans to adverfor a computer programmer to correlate the computer system, Commissioner Glen Flint said. tise $r? C1IBSE STEAKS a ROASTS date. Anderson, director of the Davis County Housing Authority, said that as the county continues to develop, the capability of using the computer for instant information on county housing will become even more important. Mr. Schaefer said the information, when available on the computer, will allow the planning department to, not only analyze one city in comparison to another, but will allow this same comparison between block groups'.
