Sheila Rodarte, Greg Thomas Folklore and histories preserved on tape to be available next year MT. PLEASAN- T- Getting to know the people of Sanpete County soon will require little moie than a cassette tape player, according to a recent press release from the Sanpete Heritage Council. A cassette tape of folklore and histories told by people who live and work in the county will be produced by The Utah Arts Council and the Sanpete Heritage Council "It will allow travelers to get a feel for the culture, heritage and traditions of the valley," says Carol Edison, folklore program coordinator for the Utah Arts council "As they dnve through they can get to know the people behind the beautiful landscape and understand what their concerns are. - what their values are and how they make a living," Edison continued. Storytelling has always been the most active form of cultural expiession in Sanpete County, and it is a part of life here. The stories were collected by folklorist Jens Lund He interviewed residents of the county and is helping supervise the project The tape is scheduled to be completed early next year and should be available to the public by May or June. Edison says that Sanpete County was a natural choice for The county was one of Utahs earliest settlements, and much of the landscape and architecture, such as old buildings, fences and barns have withstood the test of time She adds, "They are still very much a part of the environment... it is a wonderful example of what the Intermountain West looked like a hundred years ago. " The tape will be available through local and state tourism and travel councils, and will be accompanied by a booklet that describes areas of the county in more detail. "People driving through will really have a feeling of life in Sanpete County and what Sanpete County is all about." Edison says "I think Sanpete County is really a wonderful jewel." For additional information about the folklore cassette tape project, contact Edison at the Utah Arts Council, the project. "So many people in Utah have ties to Sanpete County, historically and culturally, so they are interested in its history," she states.
