Show UM V 10 Ovvi i i Wednesdays woman HUMOR A Call to Junk-Foo- d Junkies By Mollie Fermoglich m tired of pretending to like raw cauliflower, yogurt shakes or macrobiotic rice. I wont mask my through even the most trying of times. And unlike healthful snacks that contain no preservatives, junk food endures. Finally, junk food can be your friend. In recent years, Ive proclaiming my addiction, social disapproval makes me uncomfortable eating many jurfl foods in public. At business lunches, find myself saying "baked when I long to say french fried . cant seem u spent some of the best Saturday nights of my life with the Messrs. Baskin and Robbins. Unfortunately, it is considered neither chic nor mature to admit loving junk food. While one is encouraged to rave about salade Nicoise and ratatouille, which usually sound better than they taste, one is frowned upon for showing equal enthusiasm for order dessert without announcing, Ill work this of at the gym," or I his is the 1 1 penchant for Mars Bars and Charleston Chews, and, quite frankly, I make a concerted effort to avoid tracked wheat, tofu or anything that sprouts. I admit it: Im a junk-foo- d junkie. Junk food is connected to my very being. I made it from kindergarten through high school without ever hearing of thrived soy beans. In college, on Spaghetti-O- s and candy corn until that cold day, junior year, when my roommate bought our dorms very first loaf of whole-grai1 n bread. Fill with Easter grass and goodies any type which suits the family. Then enjoy during the Easter season. That was only the beginning. Natural Trail Mix and sesame treats (marvelous gourmet snacks for parakeets) replaced corn chips and pretzels; carrot juice won out over colas, the vegetarian burger eclipsed the Big Mac. I found myself bowing to peer pressure and denouncing the very foods adored. But invariably I would come to my senses by remembering one very important fact of life: In grade school it was always the kid with the red Delicious apple who wanted to trade with the one who had the Twinkies never the other way around. Whats so great about junk food? Its fun. You dont eat it because your body needs it; it will make neither your nails nor hair grow faster, nor supply you with vitamins B3, B6, B12 or any other nutrients that sound like a bingo call. Junk foods even have fun names. How can you resist anything called Cheez Doodles, Peanut Butter Cup, Crunch Bar or Chunky? Even genericalty speaking, is there a soul among us who doesnt find the word cookie irresistibly cute? Junk food makes or breaks a holiday. Who would honestly Easter egg prefer a hard-boile- d to one of solid chocolate? for Imagine mung sprouts. Junk food is also often cheaper than its healthier counterparts.
