Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, FEBRUARY 6, 1985 Box Elder Will Be Tough Gotta5 Beat Tradition In 23 By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports CLEARFIELD - When a couple of evenly matched athletic teams square off, sometimes the winning edge goes to the institution whose tradition outweighs the other by a ton. -- THAT EDGE may be small, but its none the less there. Thats what Clearfield and Layton face when they travel north to Brigham City this Thursday for the 1985 Region One Wrestling Championships to be held at Box Elder High School. MAKE NO bones about. Box Elder is w ading neck-hig- h in wrestling traditions that will be tough to crack. They've won 11 consecutive years at region wrestling tournaments which is some record to brag about. Theyve done it twice since coming into and Region One. But folks, if there were a team to finally break that string, itd have to xe the Falcons led by a determined Scott Tennis. 4-- Casey Lloyd heaves up shot against Vikes. Continued Little Danny Vmnes 9 Leads Davis Aaain over 30 points. Some folks have nicknamed Moon Little Danny Vranes" f his exceptional quickness once he gets the ball in his hands. Despite being just 1 he is outplaying every forward and center in the league. Not too many people have been able to hold him down. sf c 6-- ASSISTANT coach John Robi- son had some thoughts about Davis' recent successes too. I was talking to Wests Clark Godfrey the other day and he made the comment that the more youre in a game, the more important shooting becomes. He said height, defense and rebounding are very important, but shooting has its place with em all. Weve been fortunate that our kids have been drilling it like they have. Its a really positive thing for us. Weve got five kids that are pure shooters. Kinard may not get many points but if you want to know the truth, hes got the fu- ndamentals of shooting down perhaps more than any of them. But Dave is doing some other things for us that we really need right now. ANOTHER thing you cant overlook is our quickness. Look at the Highland game two weeks ago. In the 13 years Ive been coaching, Ive never seen the Rams not press, even if it was just a little. But against us they didnt press once because I think they respect our quickness. Still another thing I see is our jumping ability. Well never dominate other teams in rebounding, especially the bigger teams, but weve been competitive in recent games. Continued Lancers Go Cold, Falcons Get Hot Martin again ended up with a 20-pl- point evening. But it was Clearfield who won the game and they got a superb effort from Adams, Call, West, Hicks, and Lee Parry down that fourth quarter stretch. Hicks, just a junior, compliments Call well on the Falcon guardline with good shooting ability and a lot of hustle on defense. He scored five fourth quarter points which helped to nail the door shut on any Layton rally. It was a three-poiplay by Hicks with 2:21 left that gave Clearfield a lead. comfortable ADAMS also shined in that fourth quarter with some excellent ballhandling and clutch freethrow shooting. He hit four of four in the final minutes to preserve the win. It was Adams who took over for the injured Troy Markham when the latter suffered a serious knee in- ninth place finish, Clearfield finished just nine points out of fifth place. Last year was a record breaking performance in that five Clearfield wrestlers placed at state, the most that any team in the schools 23 year history has placed. "I hope were putting something together." said Tennis who feels that Box Elder is the favorite going into Thursdays meet. "Tradition is something that the young kids in junior high and elementary look at. If you're being successful, they want to be a part of it. I believe we've got that kind of feeling with our younger kids. meeting, who people draw early because of points being picked up or not and a little bit of luck." By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports KAYSVILLE Highland High may have won a lot of battles in Region Four wrestling, but the victor of the war will be declared this Thursday night at Woods Cross High School as all six schools converge on the 1985 Region Four Wrestling Championships. THE RAMS nailed a 30-2- 7 loss on the Darts last Thursday evening to claim the dual meet title. The loss for the Darts ended a string of 14 consecutive region dual wins. Davis was leading in the Highland match, 4 but a loss in the heavyweight division gave the Rams the victory. 27-2- HEADING into the Region Four meet, the Darts will take a strong tandem of folks, people from Justin Julander at 98 pounds, Reed Harrison at 105, Vaughn Casdorph at 155, Rody Meacham at heavyweight, Bruce Hinckley at 126, Russell Porter at 112 and Roger Horne as perhaps a strong candidate. Itll be close, said Dickson, referring to the region meet on Thursday. A lot of it will depend upon what happens at the seeding dar-khor- THE LEADER of the Davis squad is perhaps Casdorph who has continually got better at 155. "1 feel weve got a good chance of beating Highland or Viewmont, whoever rises to the top. We learned a lot in the dual loss to Highland last week and I think it's made us a little mad, he said. FIRST LETS take a look at the team chase. If dual meets are any indication then Highland w'ould have to be favored since they defeated Davis last week to go through region duals undefeated while the Darts had one loss. But dual meets and the region title are two different things. Viewmont for example didnt win too many dual meets but the Vikings believe they have a shot at believe it will the region crown. be between us and Davis" said Viking coach John Beddingfield. we could end up with five champions. 1 HOWEVER THE Vikes might be the only ones who believe they can win. "I believe Davis will win with us and Highland fighting for ball program has become known in recent years as the "John Wooden dynasty of Davis County junior high basketball." But that dynasty suffered a setback last Friday afternoon. THE KAYSVILLE club hadnt been beaten in three and a half years in league play, not until Central Junior High clipped then 72-6- i 9 1 TFiNNIS believes another reason for the emergence of the Clearfield program in the past two years has been the addition of Bart Thompson to the coaching staff. Thompson, who was a qualified wrestler during his competing days at Davis High, has virtually taken over the practice sessions when teaching technique. "If you'll look at this team, you'll see a lot of Bart Thompson in it. Bart has done a super job with these kids," said Tennis. "I believe the main difference with us is that the kids have begun to believe in themselves and have some v ision of w hat things could be like if they worked hard. We have talked about it often. . 0 region, Merrill Johnson, Todd 1 in Kopecky, Mark Martinez region) and Dennis Langford. All of those folks have yet to lose to others within the region. Having lost just one are Scott Ferrin and Gene Smith. I BEI.IFiVE that this year and last year are totally different," said Tennis, "You have to look at what Box Elder did just prior to the region meet last year. They brought back two kids, one who had to get an injunction, who came in and won region titles. They won't be able to do that this year, at least I don't think those kind of kids are waiting in the wings. On paper Box Elder is probfavorite but like ably an eight-poiI've said, this team has been able to "THE CHARACTER is strong too. Look at Tracy Candia at 155. He w ill only be 147 pounds if he ate as much as he could everyday of the week, but he continually goes out and dives into for the team. Against Bonneville he was down and was on his back but came back to win 7-- 1 14-1- "Another is Andy Archuletta who has had to lose 16 pounds to get to a weight where we needed him the most. Hes thinking of the team first," said Scott. rise to certain occassions and knock off people. I don't know whether it can be done, but don't second. Viewmont just doesn't have enough people. A couple of years ago we had seven wrestlers in the finals and still took fourth place" Woods Cross coach Bob Steele said. JIM DICKSON at Davis believes four teams have a shot at the title. It's a dogfight as far as I'm concerned. Highland, Davis. Woods Cross and Viewmont all have a chance at it. All I know is that losing to Highland may have helped my kids, we ll be there giving it an A for effort." As for the team race this column will go with the feelings of Wildcat mentor Bob Steele who noted. On paper it looks like Highland but I have a gut feeling Davis will win it again. 132: VAUGHAN Hall of Highland has the upper edge although Adam Howard of Viewmont is capable of winning his third region title. 138: The mystery division with the coaches leaning toward either Tim Kern of Woods Cross and Duane Hatch of Viewmont. 145: THE coaches called this weight an interesting division since several entries are still unknow n. If he wrestles then Foster of Viewmont will be favored with Derreck Kirkham of Woods Cross right behind. 155: A classic matchup between Vaughan Casdorph of Davis and Kirk Shepherd of Bountiful. 167: CASEY Kleinman of View-tohasn't lost in region duals and nt HERE IS the feelings of our three coaches concerning each weight class. 98 pounds: Justin Julander of the Darts is the odds on favorite in this class. 105: ALL three coaches point to Reid Harrison of Davis as the eventual champ on. 122: Cary Gunther of Woods Cross gets the nod here but look out for Russ Porter of Davis. 119: TWO coaches feel Jody Bodrero of Woods Cross w ill w in with an outside shot going to Alan Ence of Viewmont. 126: This figures to be a battle between Andy Capron of Highland and Bruce Hinckley of Davis. he shouldn't at region. 185: Three w restlers have beaten each other at one point or another so this figures to be between Rodger Horn of Davis. Mark Pozzouli of Viewmont and Tom Evans of Woods Cross. Which ever one wrestles the best will w in. they are that close. UNLIMITED: Again three men have a shot at the title and a fourth has an outside chance. Rick Hawley of Woods Cross has beaten everyone but only by one point. Rody Meacham of Davis is certainly capable of w inning as is big Scott May of Highland. Brian Beck of Bountiful could surprise a lot of people. TO BEAT Box Elder at Box Elder this Thursday will take a Region 4 Wrestling 3 jury. TENNIS, knowing what the past has been, has slowly built a respectable program that has a few facts of its own to brag about. The Falcons went 12-- 2 in duals this year and for the second consecutive year have concluded region dual competition with an unblemished record. Each year the Falcons have finished in the Top 10 at the state meet and despite last yaers 1985 Wrestling Championships Region 1 at Box Elder nt 55-4- SEE, CLEARFIELD has been slowly building a wrestling tradition of their own. Though it doesnt compare to that of Box Elders, its impressive in its own right. years, Clearfield High has only won one region championship, that coming back in 1975. But despite winning that year, the Falcons placed only three wrestlers in the state tournament, one being Doug Higley who captured the state crown at 98.
