Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, JANUARY 2, 1985 M Big Chuck Makes His Mark! i i FEW DAVIS COUNTY athletes ever go beyond college football and achieve their fantasies but Chuck Ehin is one who has. The former Layton High lineman who played for Coach Gary Hansen prior to four great years at BYU, is now one of the San Diego Chargers best. 1 ! a j t f r Continued Hansen-Gardn- Make Rivalary Real er around when Mike was playing, but it was when his brothers and cousins were ready to demonstrate their skills. SO THROUGH the years, Mike for the most part has coached against his own family members. There was Eddie (Mike's brother who played at Clearfield and later was killed in a water skiing accident) who played for Marcus Garrett and the Falcons and who enjoyed a highly successful three years of basketball. Later came Mark, another brother, who played two years at Clearfield and finally ended up transferring to Davis to play for Mike his senior season. V fi BUT THE cousin story is endless. You could start with Ken Gardner's boys, the likes of Kenny, Terry and Steve who all enjoyed successful stints at Clearfield and who all played against their cousin at Davis. Then it's on to Lincoln Gardner and his troops, kids like Kern, Phil. Danny. Greg, Scott and Rulon. Those guys provided a lot of firepower for the Falcons over the yeras and oh how Mike would have liked his uncle Lincoln to move a little south and nestle into Kaysvil-l- e so he could have played with, rather than against his talented cousins. . , I AND THERES still more. In recent years Mike has had to make plans to defend against the talents of kids like Cory. Jeff and Hal Schofield. These are Gardner's nephews who went on to become very valuable Clearfield High players. feels when Clearfield plays Layton today in a Region One league game. Theres a lot of desire on TODAY, Hansen lives in Kays-vill- e and has his son. Ryan, playing on the same junior high team as Mikes son Brad. Perhaps the game that stands out in Hansen's memory the most -one in which Davis and Clearfield clashed was in Hansen's senior season at Clearfield. both sides to do well, Naturally I've got some feelings for Clearfield-Davi- s games because of so many of my family have played for the Falcons. Ive been known to have bypassed seeing some of my league's teams in preseason just for a chance to see some of my cousins or nephews play in a Clearfield game. WE WERE playing Davis in in a playoff game that would decide w ho would go onto the state '63-6- 4 tournament. "The game was played in the old Weber State gymnasium. Grant Cullimore was the coach at Davis and Marcus Garrett was our coach. Off on all 1p FLOOR Models.- - 'V Furniture Made the Old Fashion Way Made to Last. They (Clearfield) had beaten us 20 consecutive times but with the help of Mark's points and Lynn Parish's last second shot at the buzzer, we beat Clearfield at Clearfield in one of my greatest victories Clearfield-Davi- s MAYBE BECAUSE we had a bit more talent on our team that year. Coach Cullimore decided to slow the game down. They had the ball and passed a lot and at halftime the score was 10-- 7 for us at half. We finally ended up beating them 6 in a real slow-dow- n affair. We went on from there to take second in the state, but wouldn't have got that far had we not beaten the Darts in the playoff game," remembered Hansen. QUEEN ANNE $29900 30-pl- ever. MAYBE THE rivalry doesn't have all the folklore of the past, but it's still a game in which we talk up a little more. I just wish that we were in the same region as Clearfield because then the intensity might come back like what it used to be ten years ago," said Gardner. Today Hansen and Gardner consider themselves both close friends to each other and it's no question from year to year that this is one game that has always got a place on the schedule. I'm concerned, when Davis plays Clearfield even today, I approach it much lik ea league game. It just isn't another n game for us. "The bottom line is that we play to win and a lot of that intensity has a lot to do w ith the past history of schools." continued Hansen.
