It is a dream come true, said Dickson, "But I hate to get it at the expense of a good friend. The good friend, who will still be a friend with perhaps just alittle of the closeness taken away was Ward Sawley. After five very successful years at Davis, Sawley decided to step down as head coach and leave the world of coaching to improve himself economically with an Ogden consulting firm. WARD WILL still be around, said Dickson who suggested that Sawley might do some scouting and other things. But it will be different, different in the fact that Ive been able to sit down with him for the past five years for at least a few minutes a day to talk football. Im going to miss that kind of relationship. It was Sawley himself, along with a couple of other Davis coaches like Kent Draayer and Mike Gardner, that helped Dickson land a spot with the Dart athler tic staff six years ago. Prior to that, Dickson had spent five junior high seasons at Central in Layton, three under Carter Cook and two with the program in his hands. ITS LIKE Mark Gardner and I told the kids last Thursday night, said Dickson, Weve all lost a close friend, not just me but the other coaches and the kids as well. I think before Thursday,-thkids might have been somewhat confused about Wards decision. But now they realize it was just a matter of economics. I know the decision was tough on Ward because I was communicating with him everyday before he decided to hang it up. e HE JUST felt it was a chance of a lifetime, a chance to get ahead financially. But at the same time he was having a tough time trying to break away from the kids. He really cared about them, which is why he has spent so much time here in the past. But now that the kids do understand, I believe they re ready to get down to business. THE KIDS, I believe, will be able to handle me, mainly because Ive been with them all summer. Its going to be a lot easier than if Ward had of been with us through the summer, mainly because Ive been the one theyve been able to build a relationship with. And truthfully thats perhaps the primary reason I come out in the summers, is to build a rapore with the kids. Because later on during the season I might get after them, but because of the relationship weve developed now they might understand that I just want them to be the best they can be. ALL STARS t Members of the Farmington All Stars include: front, Ted Hansen, left, John Morgan, Justin Leishman, Mike Brant, Adam Achter, Patrick Carlsen and Jason Traveller; back, Lance Bell, left, Jeremy Archibald, Danny Cabera, Ron Stone, Brad Wood, Paul Spencer, Kyle Day and Troy Osborn. WITH DICKSON at the helm in Kaysville, many of the things that contributed to the Darts success under Sawleys regime will continue just the same. Things like hard work. Dickson says it wasnt just Sawleys philosphy, but the entire staffs. "We all believe that the only way youre going to get things out of life is to put in time, and hopefully productive time. Its paid off for us, said Dickson. Another factor that Dickson hopes will stay the same is the countless volunteer hours. At Davis I believe the coaches have been able to spend more time coaching because of people contri JAMES D. DICKSON that the kids do understand, believe theyre ready to get down to But now I business. buting to such things as scouting, keeping statistics and countless other things, he said. STILL ANOTHER factor to stay unchanged will be the involvement of the other coaches in decision- making, just as it was under Sawley. Dickson will continue to call the ;shots on defense, just as he has successfully done in the five years under Sawley. Meanwhile, Dickson has placed all his confidence in Gardner to call the plays on offense. DEFENSE IS my strong point, said Dickson, Its not that I feel a lack of offensive skills, but its just better to have the strongest people helping the kids in the strongest places. I have plenty of confidence in the job Mike can do because he understands the offense. Dickson, by the way, has been calling the offensive plays for the junior varsity for the past two years. Coach Dickson Dickson gets excited thinking about the upcoming season but isnt making any predictions. He admits that this years group won't have the kind of experience last years had, but claimed, Weve got a good nucleus to build around. Weve got some kids that want to play, he said. I JUST want to see our program continue to get better and continue the upward swing its been on. The positive force behind Dicksons life for the past few months, especially as he applied for the head job at Layton and then waited patiently for the outcome of events at Davis, has been his wife Debbie. DEBBIE understands. That's the only way I could sum it up. Some spouses have a hard time understanding why their coaching husbands are away from home so much, but because Deb is a coach herself, she knows why and what Im doing. If you want to succeed, youve got to put in the time. She understands that. BUT THE thing to understand is that Mike wont be calling the offense, we all will. There will be things that will be used in different situations and Mike will have the freedom to use what weve already agreed upon during our scouting session. Four minds are a lot better than one. Its going to be a combined effort. INTERESTING enough, Debbie will be watching less football with Him as a head coach than when he was an assistant. With Jim as an assistant, she saw both his junior varisty games on Thursday and then the varsity contest on Friday : ; night. Im looking forward to the challenge, even though I'll have to face them without our good friend. BUT ILL have control of Ward. I know well do just fine on things, just like Ward did. If he our side and we wish Ward all the wanted something, he got it, consuccess on his endeavors too, said Diqkson in conclusion. ' tinued Dickson. 5 |
