Dean Robison, as Parliamentarian, and I, as Historian, aie assigned to visit Howell. I have always been interested in I lowell since the government established a post ol lice in Howell in 1922, and the Daughters ol the Pioneers were organized in Millard C mint v in 1921, and I wondered how long it would be before we had an organization or camp ol the DUP there. The mail now comes to the Fillmore post o ice and is delivered to mail boxes in different locations in We Howell. can thank Brigham Tomkinson that the Town of i lowell wav ever established (it was then Crystal). Ii should have been named really Tomkinson. I will write the biography ol Brigham Tomkinson and you will see the reason. Tomkinson was born in Brigham I illmore Feb. 11, 857, the son ol I phraun and Ann Douglas Tomkinson, early pioneers of Meadow and ol I illmore. Utah. Brigham married Eleanor Cireen Melville, daughter of Alexander and Jane Dutson Melville May 5, 1885. Their children were W illie Douglas, born May 22, 1888; Jane, born Aug. 29, 1893, but died March 5, 1895; Melville Alexander, born June 6, 1902. When Brigham was a small boy his parents lived on the Almon Robison ranch west ol I illmore, and the lamily all milked many cows and made butter and cheese and took to Salt Lake and traded for merchandise. Brighams father died when Brigham was only eight years old. Every summer different couples operated a saw mill up White Pine Canyon. One summer five couples of young married people, Brigham and Nell, and lour other couples, all related, decided to run the saw mill and live in the canyon. One night the biggest flood ever to come down the canyon came and washed the mill and all ot the belongings of the five couples down the canyon. That was the last ot the mill. Brigham, who always prided himself as having the best team of horses in town, went to work on the railraod through Parley's Canyon, also in Bear Canyon. When his son. Will, was 16 years old they went to Ely and hauled supplies from the end of the railroad to the mines. The next year Nell and little Melville went along and they stayed two years. The next lew years Delta and the west side were being developed. Brigham took a contract to plant and harvest 640 acres of grain. He and his family moved back to Fillmore. Brigham had made enough to purchase the Alma Greenwood home on Mam and First South St., where he and Nell ran a hotel. In the spring of 1908 he built the Alcazar Hall, the largest hall in southern Utah with a spring floor. He made money on this investment, but it caught tire in 1917 and, as we had no lire department, it burned to the ground. Brigham then look up a quarter section ol land west of town, where the state had spent thousands ol dollars trying to dig but found no water.
