Show SOIL MOISTURE Cont. Irom Front Millard County Progress, Fillmore. Utah 84631 Friday. Dec. 3, 1982 Page7 Page in the Millard and Beaver County areas this summer gives us a direet reading in inches ol moisture per foot of soil. These readings are plotted on a graph and we get a very dependable reading on the consumption of water. Since this is our first field season with the probe, we are developing a history on those fields where tubes have been installed. We need this history to correlate with soil analysis about saturated conditions so weean establish an idea of field capacity. With this information a reading can be taken rapidly at all depths in any of these fields. We are also learning not to question the probe. It is very reliable, very handy to use. The farmer spends a lot of lime w ith the top part of his plants, but half the plant is underground and this part he almost never looks at. The neutron probe gives us an opening in the soil surface so we can keep MH$ NEWS By keesha livers better track of the bottom part of the plant. These plants, in a way. are "soup eaters" that can absorb nutrients only when they are in solution. Under watering will starve the plant even when enough dry nutrients are available. But over watering also starves them because t he soup becomes too thin and seeps aw ay . Those farmers with whom this program has been used are very much in favor of it and state that because of the program they can better schedule their water turns and have a greater k now ledge ol water remaining in the soils. Because ol then enthusiasm with the probe u w ill be expanded during the 83" held season. This will enable more water users to take adv untage ol the probe and it is hoped, eventually enable them to reduce the costs ol pumping and lotal amount ol water used.
