Dutson R Marge Barton Rome Snyder: f If I were to ask "What subject fills the newspapers and magazines today? The answer would almost always be "The economy of the whole world, due to the lack of a suitable energy, on which today businesses depend in order to operate. Thousands of people are out of work, and some of them really starving for lack of food, and yet thousands of generations of people have lived happy, contented lives from the time of Adam and Eve, without ever having any of the products which require this energy in order to be useful. The little nation of Greece alone has produced some of the world's most famous philosophers: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Theophrastus, and Menander. She also produced poets, tragedians, historians: Aeschylus, Sophacles, Phidias, Euripides, Thucycides, Arrin, and Plutarch, whose biographies and writings are our most prized heritages. Although they all lived before the time of Christ, they all taught the dignity and nobility of man. Socrates believed that men are not free when freed from this or that but they are free when they are masters of themselves. Thus we see that Socrates did not believe in getting drunk or using dope of any kind which takes over the minds of man. He believed that Man should do good for the sake of good; should turn from evil to excellence. Man should passionately desire to become good citizens, knowing how to rule and how to be ruled. According to Plato, "Education is the fairest thing that the best of men can have. The particular learning which leads you throughout your life to hate that which should be hated, and love that which should be loved, will rightly be called education. People are educated who have seen the beautiful, the just and the good and lived by these truths. The Athenians were lovers of beauty without having lost their taste for simplicity. They were lovers of wisdom without loss of manly vigor. They believed that every normal person has within himself the elements of greatness found in every hero or heroine. When put to the test the hidden greatness comes to light. Some people actively develop that spark of greatness while others hide their light under a bushel basket. Euripides, the great Greek dramatist poet and tragedian, had the conviction of the worth of every man on earth. He had a tender compassion for all of the unfortunate, and a love that made him see deep into the heart of every person. According to Aristophanes, the Greek poet and dramatist, Eupides taught the Athenians to think, see, understand, suspect, and question everything until he discovered the truth. Greek another great Aeschylus, tragedian, had the power to present suffering and death in his tragedies, to exalt his audiences rather than depress them. He had the "power to display mans misery at its blackest and mans grandeur at its greatest." No one has struck such ringing music from lifes dissonances, is an apt description of the Not tragedies of Aeschylus. He said prosperity, but sin brings misery. Pain and error are steps up the ladder of knowledge." Herodotus, another Greek leader who lived around 450 years before Christ, is called the Father of history, geography, archeology, anthropology, sociology and whatever has to do with human beings and where they live. He traveled all over the (then known) world and liked all of the people. He is the kind of leader we need today - one who sees excellence in all cultures. Sophocles, who lived from 495 B.C. to 406 B.C. raised tragic poetry and drama to its highest pitch, according to some literary critics, believed in acceptance such as Thy Will Be Done and Lo, 1 come to do Thy Will.; The strong can keep the trancient and the eternal separate." Laws of Purity and reverence which no forgetfulness shall ever put to sleep. Restraint, not excess, governed his actions. We would do wed to study the lives of some of these great leaders of the past as those ancient leaders could give us a better insight into our own age, perhaps tohelp us solve some of the problems of better us a and understanding give day, of the worthwhile projects which should occupy our time.
