New Microfilms Available at BYU Library Information on 140,000 rolls of microfilm donated to the Utah Valley Branch Genealogical Library last year is now available to the public, thanks to the patrons and others interested in the facility who helped buy new filing cabinets. The new rolls of film bring the library's collection of microfilms to more than 200,000 rolls, making it the largest branch genealogical library in the United States. The additional microfilms were donated to the branch library by the LDS Church Genealogical Society in Salt Lake City last year, but they were not available to the public for some time because there was no place to file them. The films had to be left in stacks of cardboard boxes until dona- tions by patrons and others provided the new filing cabinets. Among the microfilm available are the U.S. federal census records from 1790 through 1900, a copy of the TIB (Temple Index Bureau) records from the Salt Lake City LDS Library, the indexs for the British Vital Records from 1837 through 1903, and many historical society periodicals, said Edward Whcatfill, volunteer publicity coordinator for the branch library. Resources offered by the library, with the addition of the new microfilms, will save many patrons Irom having to travel to the library in Salt Lake City, he commented. Whcatfill said the branch library is open to anyone who wishes to use it. Trained volunteers and emloyccs arc there to help patrons with research. |
