There were 13 fewer school bus accidents in the state during calendar year 1981 than in 1980. These statistics were recently released by Kelvin C. Clayton, Pupil Transportation Specialist for the Utah State Office of Education, as part of a comparison of the school bus safety records for Utah's school districts for the past three years. With a total of 13,801,019 miles driven in 1981, 44 school bus accidents took place in the state. Whereas the year before, 57 occurred. In 1979, 53 accidents were recorded. According to Clayton, the data was compiled on the basis of the school bus safety formula. This formula calculates accident frequency rates by dividing the annual number of accidents in each school district (multiplied by ,000.000) by the districts bus mileage. Utah's three-yea- r average accident frequency rate for school bus transportation in Utah is 3.226, and the total rate for all districts in 1981 is 3.188, a respectable decline from the 4.062 rate reached in 1980. The data also indicates that 11 of Utahs 40 school districts were accident-fre- e 1 Jerry R. Kennedy SEAL & KENNEDY NOTICE TO CREDITORS Probate No. 2439 in the Matter of the Estate of TAFTC. Wildlife Officers caution Hunters Hunters should know for sure they can get access into an area before applying for any restricted big game huntpermit. says Dwight Bunnell, assistant chief of big game for the Division of Wildlife Resources of the Utah Department of Natural Resources and Energy. Many big game restricted hunting permits offered in northern Utah are primarily on private land. These areas are marked with a red asterick in the Big Game Proclamation and are accompanied by the statement, These areas consist primarily of private land and hunters should obtain permission prior to making application for these areas. In the past, individuals have not paid any attention to this statement, and then have not been able to gain access, creating problems for the hunter and the Division. ing A big game says BunneD, permit does not guarantee access. Wildlife Jsck Rensel, Resources Northern Regional supervisor, emphasizes that it is totally the responsibility of the hunter to gain access, not the Division of Wildlife Resources. All we can do is to provide for proper management. We offer the permits because it is in the best interest of habitat for wildlife and it baa nothing to do with whether hunters can get on the land or not, says Rensel. If hunters do not know who owns the land where they wish to hunt, they should check land ownership maps at the county courthouse, says Rensel. It is impossible for the Division of Wildlife to know who owns the land in most areas. have learned from past experience that measles can easily be imported into Utah and can spread unless vaccination, surveillance, and control programs continue. Immunization levels, although high for children in the elementary grades, are much lower for older children. The new School Immunization Law, which goes into effect this fall, will that all school require children through twelfth grade be immunized against measles as well as mumps, rubella, diphtheria, pertussis. tetanus, and polio. Compliance with the law will also help to prevent future outbreaks. As other countries I join with the effort to eliminate measles, we can expect that one day measles will join smallpox on the list of Q- -l am a former Prisoner eradicated diseases.
