Face the truth sooner the better, so that treatment wont be delayed. Dont try to protectthe family. ..even very young children can sense the problem. 2. Learn the Facts about alcoholism. There are many sources of reading material (see Where to Get Help) in a following article. You may also benefit from group or individual counseling before, and while, the alcoholic is being treated. 3. You Own Emotions -depression, anger and are common reactions among the family and can slow recovery. Facing and overcoming them will make you happier, more confident, whatever happens. 4. Be Fair to Yourself - the alcoholic often tries to blame others for the problem. Remember, that you are not the cause; letting the alcoholic pul you in Ihe w rong doesnt help anyone. 5. Build a healthy home atmosphere. You should pursue outside interests and friendships regardless of alcoholics sickness. An isolated, unhappy family cant help the alcoholic or themselves. 6. Be Patient and Alcoholism compassionate. develops slowly and cant be overcome in a hurry. I ct the alcoholic know you still love and respect the person although you dont approve of the drinking. 7. Get All the Help You Can Encourage the alcoholic to attend alcohol treatment programs, tell parents, brothers and sisters of the alcoholic about the problem, so they wont be taken advantage of. 8. Be Prepared to Act -threats and arguments dont get results. Decide on a course of action with the family and trusted advisors. If the alcoholic refuses to be treated, you may have to leave or ask him, or her, to leave. Dont try to treat alcoholism yourself! Both alcoholic and family need help to cope! Mays NOT lo help Ihe alcoholic: 1. Dont punish, bribe or threaten the alcoholic into quitting. Itll increase guilt or make him and or her rely on alcohol even more. 2. Dont hide or dump bottles, or pretend you can cure the alcohhc by taking control of his or her life. .3. Dont drink along with the problem drinker. This only reinforces the habit and you may end up with a drinking problem yourself. 4. Dont take over all responsibilities (family, job or school) for the alcoholic. This would rob him 'her of dignity and a sense of belonging. 5. Dont demand or accept - - I 1 1 FFA Leamington Filmore Phillips, The sixth annual Utah Arts Festival will be held June 23 through June 27. Getting help for your marriage all alone is like planning a family without consulting with your spouse, it is likely to be unproductive. The person in counseling will probably come to feel better about themself and may even force some change in their spouse because of it, but not without some difficult readjustment. So if you feel unhappy with your marriage, think it could be more than it is, and desire to reshape it rather than just throw it out it makes good sense to get some help. This help will not take away your own responsibilities or rights in the marriage but rather provide a new fund of energy and structure for vou to draw upon. |
