Dutton FILLMORE by STELLA DAY Whenever nations, or even Individuals, get over Impressed with their importance, their prestige, their power, Nature has a way of humbling them. A few decades ago England was one of the most powerful nations in all of the world. She was Known as "The Ruler of the Seas" because of her powerful Navies. Now she has to plead to even become a member of the Common Market. Not very long ago the smaller nations of the world all turned to the United States to have her as a friend and protector. But right now our popularity seems to be waning, and no one really knows why. Watergate may have begun the downfall, then Vietnam. Our involvement with the Jews and the Arabs have dragged our great country down until all of us are restless and overcome by a feeling of "defeatism". We are the very same nation we were a few years ago. We have the very same people, the same abilities and the same resources. Why are we such a low ebb? We need a change of attitude. We should review our history and emphasize the worthwhile accomplishments of our great country. No people in all of this world are blessed with the many luxuries that each family in our country enjoys. Of course some people have more than other have, but really, in most cases, it is because these families are more ambitious and work more diligently than those who have less. If families teach their children to work, even if they don't earn as much as they think they should get, they are that much ahead. It is better to be getting a few dollars than it is to get nothing at all. The trouble is parents do not teach their children to save their money rather than squander it on foolish things which we really do not need. Our country is practically a new nation compared with the countries of Europe, and still we are the country where our citizens have the most freedom of any citizens in the world. Nearly everyone owns their own homes, and enjoys three meals a day. Of course some families have better meals than other families. However, often times that is because the members of that family do not plant gardens and orchards and really work to have better meals. I firmly believe that most families could eat well if they really worked as much as they should. When the pioneers settled in the desert country, each family had a garden and orchard, since there were no stores and you raised your food or went without, even small children were taught to help with the garden. When you think about it, you marvel at how fast the United States grew after the Thirteen Colonies won their freedom from England. Our thirteen Colonies had only been a nation for 26 years when Thomas Jefferson, our third president, made the Louisiana Purchase (1803) which together with the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Increased the United States from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. This addition made the United States one of the largest nations in the world. Some of the European Countries owned colonies in South America and Africa, but they were Inhabited by ignorant natives, who were ruled by a native chief. Basically we are a friendly, considerate people. We can regain our leadership by diligently pursuing an honest, compassionate method of dealing with all nations.
