Sagers said the milk cartons with a small opening work well as bait boxes since mice can get to the bait but birds cant. He advises using fresh bait as the baits tend to oxidize, break down and lost their effectiveness within a few months. The extension agent also tells people with back yard trees to be aware and anticipate possible problems from mice or other mammals. He says mice can move in and do damage before they are noticed unless one is alert. Watch for their telltale signs such as runways in the grass and droppings on hard surfaces. Sagers said the porcupine is another animal that can do serious damage to fruit trees in the winter. When one gets in an orchard, it must be physically removed. It can be trapped or herded into a box using long sticks, covered with a lid and hauled away.
