The Assooated Press SALT LAKE CITY - Parents of Nibley Park Elementary School pupils have voted to require children wear uniforms beginning this fall. The Salt Lake City elementary will become Utah'sfirst public school to require students to wear uniforms since the 1994 Legislature passed a law to give parents this power. Last week the parents voted 91-54 to go to uniforms. The teachers already had signed off. & @ Some public schools elsewhere in the country have gone to school uniforms to de-emphasize gang colors and expensive designer labels and focus on academic achievement. “Uniforms encourage collaboration and unity,” Larson said. “From our famous Utah Jazz to Scouting and our children’s athletic teams, all are in uniform.” Families can opt out if they have reasons their children shouldn't participate. Exemptions will be examined on a case-by-case basis, Larson said. Boys and girls will wear plain white or navy blue tops with collars and short or long sleeves. In cooler weather, plain white or navy blue sweaters and sweat shirts are permitted. Boys and girls may wear navy ortan trousers or walking shorts. Girls may wear navy or tan skorts (skirtlike shorts) or jumpers. & SENIORS! The bar was anoriginal haunt of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Antique Owl Bar outlasts outlaws The Associated Press SUNDANCE- If the Owl Bar could talk, it would have landed in a shallow grave a long time ago. Heck, somebodyal- ready took a shotatit. That’s because this antique rosewood bar has always been a conversation corner for outlaws. Before it closed March 31, 1993, in the small town of Thermopol| is, Wyo., it was a biker bar. Long before that, however, it was a roost for the Wild Bunch - the largest outlaw gang in the annals of Western history, led by Utah natives Butch Cassidy (Robert LeRoy Parker) and the Sundance Kid (Harry Longabaugh). And it was the Sundance Kid who rescued the Owl Bar from a storage shed after the bank had repossessed it. Actor Robert Redford, who starred with Paul Newman in the 1969 movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” gave the Kid’s name to this Provo Canyon resort and spinoff film festival, catalog retail business and art institute. Redford also restored the Owl Bar and opened it to customers last month, Of course, the latest clientele at the Owl is decidedly more well-behaved than the previous crowd that bellied up to the 18foot-long counter. And thebaritself has been dusted off and made presentable. “When we went up to Thermopolis to get the bar and haulit to Sundance, I was excited because I'd hearda little of the history behind it,” says Donald Smith of Provo, a member of the Western Outlaw and Lawmen Historical Association who transported the bar with help from Jim Thoms of Sundance. “Then they opened the door to the storage shed and there was all this junk in shambles. I though, ‘My gosh, why would he want something like this?’ ” Believed to be built in Ireland around the close of the 19th century, the Owl Bar was sent to WILLOW BEND ACTIVE ADULT COMMUNITY 2300 N. Hill Field Road, Layton England and eventually shipped to the frontier town of Thermo- polis, about 400 miles northeast of Sundance. It was one of three bars in the area owned by Tom Skinner, an acquaintance of Cassidy’s gang who had sold whiskey out. of a wagon. Skinner moved the Owl Bar into a brick building in 1906, beginning a long string of various locations and owners. In its outlaw heyday, the Owl and its sister bar - the Hole in the Wall - were popular haunts because they were along the legendary Outlaw Trail, which stretches from Canada to Mexico and was used by bandits for decades as a way to escape the law. The route was sometimes known as the “Owlhoot Trail,” because riders frequently traveled it at night to avoid detection.
