The many hundreds who gave of their time and talents to make this yearly event so outstanding should receive the heartfelt thanks of each person who was privileged to attend such a professional performance. My mind went back to 1964, the year the whole town helped to clean this now beautiful park, which was, at that time, one mass of weeds and the hill was covered with great giarA thistles. The City had no money to clean up the park and we were entering the national "Clean Up, Paint Up, Fix Up" campaign with headquarters in Washington, D.c. Dr. Arvil Stark had been to Fillmore several times during the spring and summer and had helped us get the town really in excellent condition, all but the land, which had been purchased for a new city park. He said for the Garden Club to sponsor the cleaning up of the new park. Elva Martindale was the Garden Club president and Leon said he would get all of the men below the bridge to bring their teams and plows if the other parts of town would do the same. Edward Peterson got the men in that part of town. Gene McBride, Neldon Brunson, and others, helped get the men and boys to help and we really worked until the park was ready to have the sprinkling system put in and the grass planted. The women and children also weeded and worked diligently in cleaning that big field. We generally worked early in the morning and late in the afternoon. We really had no idea we would win first place in the nation for our hard work that year. had made a scrap book (which I still have) and taken pictures of all of the projects we had completed. When Mayor Howard Johns received a phone call that Fillmore was one of three towns in the United States in the running for first place, was in seventh heaven". We were not to find out which of the three towns would be first until February 8, 1965 when the National Bureau of Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up would hold a two-da- y conference in Washington, D.C. on February 8th and coaxed Aunt Nell Huntsman to take the 9th, 1965. trip to Washington with me. Dr. Blaine Huntsman, my nephew, was scheduled to attend a National Convention of State Superintendents (he was superintendent of high schools in Los Altos, California at the time) and his conference was in Washington, D C. His son, Blaine, Jr., was getting h s doctorate at Pennsylvania University at the time and of course he came to our convention to ftelp us celebrate, as did Lawrence and Vera Huntsman, cousins of ours who both had jobs in Washington, D.C. That great big ballroom at the Statlsr Hotel in Washington, D.C. was just crowded with people who had come from every part of the United States to receive awards, since besides first, second, and third places, there were many lesser awards. Many cities and towns sent delegates, as the conference explained exactly how to organize and work the whole year through to keep a dean town, and these sessions had the top men and women in every field of civic improvement. At the banquet they announced third place winners first; and when that was Munsing, Michigan, all of the 15 at bur table held their breaths unt.l the second place winner, Lennox. So. Dakota, was announced. Of course w- knew then that Fillmore had won. I never rerrembP of hearing 15 people give such a loud Our Utah Sentor and Representatives, cheer! Bennett. Moss, and King, were at our table too, and all of them went to the stage with me to receive the big trophy, which is now in the Fillmore Library. We were so happy we won that year as the very next year the bureau changed and had 10 first place winners in each catagory. Fillmore was in the town catagory of less than five thousand population. Brigham City won the next year, but there were nine other first place winners in her catagory. Therefore, Fillmore is the only town in Utah who ever won "First Place in the Nation all by herself in towns with less than 5,000 population. Now, we have our lovely park and we are still working hard to make more improvements. Our next improvement should be the building of some kind of shelter in the picnic area and the purchasing of some playground equipment. If we all work together, we can do anything we have in mind. It just takes the giving of all of our talents put together, and I am sure it will be done before too long. I I I Jean Smith Reporter Photographer BANQUET IO pc.
