Marge Barton Reporter Photographer Compositor Display Ads - by STELLA DAY Linda Wood Although this last year has been a very disappointing one in nearly every project I have begun, there are still a few projects which have taken place which help to compensate for my many disappointments. 1 would plan to attend a workshop or some convention and just before 1 was to have left, I would break my arm or come down with some blood infection, break my nose; well, name it - I had it!. Perhaps if 1 were sedentary and not used to going places and taking part in so many activities, I would not be so disappointed. But there are so many worthwhile things which need doing that I want to do all that 1 can do to help get these projects done. One of these wonderful projects is entering the Tribune Beautification contest, which Fillmore has been doing for the last 30 years. We won first place in the state that very first year and we have won at least vjne state award out of the 13 different categories in which it is possible to enter each year. There were many more entries this year than ever before, and I have been unable to do very much toward getting Fillmore people to enter. Generally, I begin early and ask different ones to enter the 13 different projects. If we plan early enough in the year, we could have entries in every category, but we really have to work toward our goal, beginning with spring planting, and unless people are reminded, they forget to plant certain areas or to arrange for certain things to be done until it is too late and they cant enter the contest. One town had over 300 entries alone and it took over 30 judges to judge this years entries. When we see the pictures of these entries, we can see how much the whole town benefits by this contest alone. We all need reminding, and even urging, to enter as most people are afraid to lose. It isnt winning that is the most helpful thing; it is entering, since if we enter we do more to keep our places beautiful than we would do if we did not enter. Think how much the town benefits if 200 people enter in one year, for that number of entries came from Layton alone. In the Home section of the Sunday Tribune is the list of the winners, and was 1 happy to see the picture of the Stella Day Fountain and plantings as the winner in the State in its category. I had nothing whatever to do with this project, although I am extremely proud of it and of all of those diligent people who worked day and night to make this most beautiful project such an asset to our lovely park. It seemed to me that some of the counties need prodding a bit, as Juab, Sevier, and Piute Counties are in District 5, along with Millard, Sanpete and Wayne Counties, but the first three mentioned counties did not have one entry, which means half of district are not even the counties in our interested in becoming more counties, keeping more beautiful yards for our families to enjoy. Don and Patsy Iverson won first place in the district for their home yards. I do hope each of us takes the time to visit these yards, as we will surely get some good ideas, from the beautiful grounds surrounding ,iDon and Patsys home. First West Street between First and Second South also won first place. Fern Brunson was chairman of this project. Dallin Nielsen was chairman of another neighborhood project. Center Street from Main to Second West, and I know personally that he and Cathryn, together with their committee, really worked on this project, but just a few spots spoiled the project or kept it from getting in the first place section. First East between Center and First South with the Little Park on Center Street, whose chairman was Dr. Blaine Huntsman, had 20 people who worked on this project (Dr. Blaine and his wife Helen, Ray and Jerry Rosval, Roy, Gloria, Maria and Michael Tomkinson, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dunson and three children. Dean, Fay and Joy Dunson, four of the Tony Dearden family, Stephenie, Darin. Trisha, and Jennie, Ashby Robison and Mark Paxton, and perhaps others all worked on this project) Duane and Linda Baugh, Ardell Wright and Neldon and Dolores Brunson all got awards for continuous maintenance. They have each won a state award and this will make five years for Neldon and Dolores, therefore, they will be awarded a tree of their choice. The Fillmore Stakehouse, Millard Courthouse, Territorial Museum also won continuous improvement and Vem and Elda Freeman and the Forest Service won second place on their grounds.
