Mary Jane was born on August 18, 1889 at Kanosh, the oldest child of Dennis Bryant and Mary Elizabeth Rogers Manhard. She married Arthur Paxton on September 10, 1906 in Fillmore. The marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple. Mary Jane is the mother of eight children. Her husband Arthur and three sons. Calvin, Stillman, and Kenneth are deceased. Her living children are Cleon Paxton of Creswell, Oregon; Earl and Vivian Paxton, both of Granger, Bonnie Russell, Bountiful, and Sylvia Penney of Kanosh. She has 29 grandchildren, 64 and 15 Mary Jane has always been active in the LDS Church. She has taught Primary, Sunday School, was a visiting MIA, teacher and quilt chairman in Relief Society for 20 years. She was health officer for many years and traveled to other towns to help nurse the sick and needy. Until her eyesight failed, she lived in her own home, had a lovely garden and flowers. Her home was filled with relatives and friends at the deer hunt. Many of the boys and girls she taught through the years received quilt tops or quilts for weddings and baby gifts. She played the harmonica with the Kanosh Band for many programs and parades. She lived all her life in Kanosh until the last few years, when she spends her winters in the northern part of the state with her family and the summers with Theodore and Sylvia Penney. Her greatest regret is that she can't see to quilt or immediately recognize the many friends and relatives who come to visit her.
