Dutson Jane Wilson FILLMORE STELLA DAY The members of (he Fillmore Garden C lub have lost one of their charter members this week, in the death of our beloved treasurer, K. Noble Day. For thirty years he had served faithfully as our treasurer, as well as one of our most devoted members. Most garden clubs have very little use for a treasurer as they have so few funds and membership fees are small, barely enough to pay the state and national dues But the Fillmore Garden Club has always entered every contest possible to earn funds for doing civic projects. The very first award we won was the Salt Lake Tribune Award of $.100.00 worth of trees which were planted at the Millard High School (flowering crab trees around the old lunch room). Noble helped with every project, for winning meant we had done more civic projects than any other garden club. We would appoint work meetings, sometimes early in the morning and sometimes in the evenings, but Noble and Lila were there to help us do whatever of needing doing. Noble and Lila were their street and won first place in the state for five years straight for being the most well groomed neighborhood in the state. The Garden Club has won many hundreds of dollars from the Shell Oil Company, Sears Roebuck Co. and the Kellog Co., who used to sponsor "The Cleanest Town" awards. They have discontinued giving but still give national awards. However, we do not enter the national awards as we dont stand a chance of winning against the clubs of the eastern states or those of the southern states who have hundreds of dollars to spend on their projects. The Garden Club has voted to purchase a grove of special trees and dedicate the grove to Noble Day, as it will be a monument to his memory for years to come. This grove will be planted in the new park and will be done as quickly as we can get the plant material. Since Memorial Day has been celebrated this week it isanopporune time to talk of planting gardens which will supply the (Towers needed to properly celebrate this occasion. For Garden Club members, especially this time of year, calls for many more flower arrangements then any other time of year. F.verv year since the Fillmore Garden Club was organized, thirty-onyears ago. we have been furnished at least ten baskets ol flowers for the graduating exercises ot the Millard High School, which always come around Memorial Day. T his means that we have to have many-extrflowers in bloom, in order to supply the baskets of graduation, as well as have the many arrangements we will need for decorating the graves of our loved ones who have proceeded us. But planning exactly what w ill be in bloom this time of year takes study and determination. Much depends on the type of spring weather we have had. However, we may be sure if we plant certain types of plants since, if we have had an early spring, the old dependable red peony, Felix Crousse, will be gone. This red peony was brought to Fillmore from Michigan by Joseph V. Robison who. with some of his brothers, had one of the first nurseries in Filstate-awards- , Dennis Dobson, D.D.S.
