Yet day by day, ani night after night there ar emany de Buoying selves and slowly killing their loved ones, the! nearest an, dearest ffriends. We would wrest the weapon from the hand of the suicide, the murderei yet many put the cup of liquor tt their neighbors lips and bid them drink degradation, sorrow and slow death. It is very sad to have ou. loved ones leave us, to depart thh. life. The decay of the mortal bod, la Jndeod sad, but to note the decay of an immortal soul is the saddest o. all. Day by day the drinker of liquor wastes Ms vitality, his Intellect his mortal Uv.y becomes weaker and uis soul s'.ua. dies, an dsaddest ot all 1 ween, is .o think to think what might hn.o aeon. Kelly mi Irrespective of political belief, .turned ut on Tuesday evening last to hear he famous speakers, James H. Moyle .nd Levi N. Harmon expound the truths of the political questions of the lay as seen from the Democratic side. The Ladles Democratic Quarteete ,ave a selection from their collection f campaign songs which was well by the audience assembled. Chairman Stevens then announced Ir. Moyle as the first speaker of the venlng who said in part that this atlon was in the midst ot one of the jost important efforts of its carreer; md that invariably when an effort of he kind now in progress was under-va- y that a man ot the hour had arlis-- n to lead the nation out of its difficulty. He stated that Woodrow Wil .on was the man of the hour" in the jpresent Instance and pleaded with he people assembled to do all in their power to help elect him to the presidential chair. He cited numerous nstanccs of laws for the betterment t.the American people which had een passed under Democratic rule iurlnf the past three years and a half .Mi more especially the Child Labor 1a w, Federal Reserve Bank Law, the tural Credi ts Law and the Eight hour aw. He closed with a eulogy to ev-r- y candidate on the Democratic Tic-on the Na.flonal, State and County .'lekets. A piano solo was then rendered by Jrs. Wm. Rasmussen which was to the limit by all present. Chairman Stevens then Introduced as the next speaker of the evening Mr. .cvi N. Harmon of Salt Lake City. Mr. Harmon began his remarks by laying .that he felt like a lately missionary from his Held of ,abor who had been asked to address he people of 'his own Ward on what te had accom pished while away and ho had been preceded by his bishop u the speaking that evening. He as so nervous that when he arose to peak the missionary said that he would give his testimony as being heartily in favor of all that had been said and thorupon sat down. But Mr. Harmon was not at all nervous and proved 'by his tal kthat ho thoroughly. undTstood his subject. He said that In every Instance where legislation was In favor of the people as against the socalled Interests or tho principals of humanity the president had taken the side of humanity. He reviewed briefly the work of the Democratic party wlhle in pow or and coming down to the District Ticket said 'that Judges who sat upon the bouch should be Imbued with the Concluded on Page 8 re-eiv- It-t- le thereby enal ling the overworked mother to dovelop the technique of the nursery pd cultivate the flno ait of home making. Mrs. Wilkins, mother off Mr. Jack Wilkins is here on a visit to her sou and his family. The Home Economics Club ot Fillmore will hold Its next meeting in with the Relief 8oclety at the Relief Hall Tuesday, October 31st. It is desired that each and every housewife in Fillmore be present. The main business will be a discussion of the benefits of a Laundry. This is a question which should be ot Interest to everyone. The washing and ironing constitutes one of the biggest problems of the home. If the reader will stop to consider the amount of time and energy each woman of the community is spending on washing and ironing, she will agree that much valuable time and energy could be saved by having the work done on the plan. Furthermore it would be greatly to the comfort and efficiency of the home to have the muss and drudgery cut out of its weekly .of Washday program thus leaving the busy house wife ee to devote her time to other duties. This is an age of machinery. What would you think of the- farmer who harvested his grain with a cradle and theshed it with a flail? Yet the old scrubbing board is still In use and the house Is filled with steam while mother sweats over the wash tub every Monday. Le us have a Laundry - the opportunity November 7th to vote on an amendment of Article 13 of the State Con stitution, relating to Revenue and Taxation. and Many of you have been told that this amendment will increase taxes dn net proceeds of mines thereby reduce the taxes of those who do not own mining property. Wlli that be the result? if so, then why are hot your taxes lower NOW, as net proceeds of mines in- creased FIVE times between statehood and 1915 and THIS year are almost THREE times what they were last year? Have your taxes come DOWN as mine proceeds went UP? They have NOT. Do you think your taxes will ever be reduced by giving the tax gatherers MORE TAXING POWER? Wouldnt you rather keep your present Constitution, which LIMITS the taxing powers? Have your public officers ever failed to SPEND ALL THE TAXES THEY CAN COLLECT? a Do you know this amendment allows property to be CLASSIFIED and taxed at DIFFERENT RATES, without saying whose taxes will be raised and whose lowered? If, as you may have been told, this is intended to reduce taxes on homes, or household goods, or farms, WHY DOESNT IT SAY SO? Was it because they intend to do something they havent told you about? Read the amendment and try tofind the place where it says ANYIODYS taxes will be LOWER. Look at Section 9 of the amendment. It says Legislative appropriations must not exceed the rates al- about rates, which means there is NO LIMIT. Your present Constitution fixes a limit. If this change were made intentionally it is an lowed in Section SIX, and Section Six says NOTHING . it is a mistake, how many other mistakes are there? Do you know the amendment WIPES OUT ENTIRELY that provision of the Constitution which says taxes shall be UNIFORM and EQUAL on ALL property? WHY? So they can tax some of you MORE than others-a- nd this doesent mean MINES, as mines are treated separately In another outrage; if Section. the amendment also permits DOUBLE TAXATION of companies or corporations-n- ot only MINING companies, but ALL companies, including YOUR company when they decide to put that burden on you? you know this amendment proposes to take power from men ELECTED by YOU and give it to men Do you know et ,en-oy- ed our Inside pages on Wednesday afternoon of election week or rather the week in which election day occurs, of the election In the National as well as the state election. We ourselves will endeavor to get the.coinplete returns from the county election in Millard County. Wlith the facilities which the Wescm Nowspaper Union possesses for news gathering in every part of the world they can do this much better .than we could hope to. It is this service which la supplied to ns for a consideration each week that makes a eight pago paper possible in Millard County At this time. The Western Newspaper Union is to the country weekly what the Associated press is to the large daily paper. This fact makes of tho country weekly a dosirable paper to read as he pap er which employs this service contains more news than It would be possible for the editor to obtain by his own efforts even if he gave all his time and attention to news gathering. Tho Progress alms to keep Just a bit ahead of its competitors in getting the news for Its subscribers, so for a full account of the election returns read the Progress. At a meeting of the district school teachers held last week it wns decided to form a playground for the school children of Fillmore. Led by Principal tippets tho grade teachers have gotten busy with the result that there aro now in place four volley ball courts, three baskot ball courts and one giant's stride, an dlt is expected that three more of the latter will be erected shortly and about 20 swings. A movement of this kind should have tho earnest support of every citizen s. it serves to keep the children off tho street during recess hours and leaves no room in their minds for mischief making habits such as throwing stones and breaking windows. Money is needed to carry out this move and a public stbscrip tlon. should be taken up to further So when yon are acostcd thhon the street or In your homes for a lit.le money help tins gojd movement along do not turn down the teacher who asks for your support, as those things all cost money. Principal Tippetts and tho grade teachers who have the movement in charge are to Ic commended for the Interest they are In ing in tho matter. VOTERS OF UTAH: You will have large crowd of Fillmore cltlze3 arrangements with the Western Newspaper Union of Salt Lake City to furnish us with as complete election returns as can be gotten jp to the time they go to presson El V f DEMOCRATIC RALLY We have made E TOD! A From what source to we derive so much pleasure as from, the sense ot sight? How many people of lofty am bitlon fall due to poor sight? What is the horrid abberatlon or what is the agonizing thought that can compare with that of the loss of sight? All other bodily ills fade by their lnslg be niflcance when a comparison drawn. I take it, therefore, that it is our sacred duty to care for our eyes as we would guard life itself. In order to protect the eyes opticians say thpt we must not face a strong light while reading, or at any time gaze at a brilliant light. The writer of this article has attended Mutual' many nights in our Ward Chapel. He finds Mutual a dellghtfful place to be. There able officers preside; there well prepared teachers tell the attentive classes of the big things o fllfe; there all can Join in the study, be they Jew or gentile, as Mutual teachers hold their instruction more to the ideas of social and economic betterment than to special religious dogma.. This is an Agora Indeed where all can meet with good Christian spirit. But there is one good reason why we should not now go to Mutual. 'When I have said prtect your eyes, I have given the reason. No building could be more poorly lighted than the Ward Chapel. The lights are blinding and so arrange that one must stare at them during the whole time that Mutual is Concluded on Page 8. g NUMBER 43 Y W e have absolutely the best line of stoves and ranges James in the UTAH, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27. 1916 ,TCH New Shipment Of Heaters & Ranges. o J Cultivate a personal interest ads for that will be. an merely important way of your purse from the little leaks that occur through unwise buying.
