He noticed something off the side of the road. A closer look proved it was an overturned car. The driver was still in the car but hanging out of the window. Freeman tried to make the young man more comfortable. He stopped a passing car a few minutes later and sent them on to get help. Freeman stayed with the young man until the ambulance from arrived Gunnison. The young driver had laid there for nearly two hours before Freeman had noticed him. Many cars had passed by not seeing the accident. Freeman didnt have much to say about the incident. The Farmer of the Year is sponsored annually by the SCD and the Goodyear Rubber & Tire Co. Howard became a cooperator with the SCD in 1965. He developed a conservation plan and has been actively engaged in conservation work before that time and since. Howard and his wife, Darlene have four sons. The youngest. Royce, is now farming with his dad. How.d runs between head, of cows in a operation and 15 head of dairy cows. He operates about 6500 acres including about 2700 acres of BLM. He has about 100 acres of farm ground. He has reseeded about 1350 acres of his rangeland, has leveled about 30 acres and has installed a number of headgates. He has installed over five miles of fence and developed livestock water for better livestock distribution and better utilization of his rangeland grasses. Howard thinks all these projects have been worthwhile, but feels the range seeding has probably been the most beneficial. In addtion, he has served as town clerk for three terms, served on the irrigation company board for six years, and served in the Scipio Ward Bishopric for 17 years.
