Show UTA SERVES THE PUBLIC From Payson to Brigham City and Tooele to the Wasatch foothills, Utah Transit Authority (UTA) is the public transit system that serves six counties in Utah. It operates 567 buses within its service area and carries on the average 84,800 people each weekday. UTAis not, however, just about buses. In addition to the newrail line, UTA offers other transportation choices. UTA has a Rideshare Department with trained Rideshare Specialists who work closely with businesses to offer employers and their employees alternative transportation choices. ese choices include an EcoPass (yearly bus passes for employeesat participating companies), car and van pools, riding a bicycle, and _telecommut- ing from home. Reducing the numberof single occupant vehi- cles (SOVs) on our roads helps usall by reducingtraffic conges- tion, and ultimately air pollution. UTAwasorganized in 1970 to provide a public mass transportation system for Utah communities. UTA is not a state agency and receives nostate funding. It works two ways: one is a com- pressed work week which allows employees to work longer hours, but shorter weeks, and the other is a staggered work hour program having dif- ferent starting and ending times for the workday. Employees whohave used these Bnd several benefits. Theyare able to avoid someof the commuting congestion they otherwise would encounter on a traditional schedule. They have also found that their families benefit because they are able to schedule time around family activities. . “Working the compressed work week has helped mebal- ance out the things that I want to accomplish in my career as well as my family life,” says Janeen Jones. “I knowthat my attitude toward coming to work each dayhas improved because the previous guilt (about neglecting my family) isn’t there.” A compressed work week mayhelp employees avoid rush hour traffic and can reduce the number of commute days.
