NBAhas its share ofold faces in new places By Chris Ekstrand Special contributor NBAtraining camps are open, the start of the regular is only days away and some of the biggest names in the NBA have changed their addresses. Here’s a team-by-team analysis of some of the biggest movesthat took place during the offseason: Scottie Pippen, Steve Smith and Detlef Schrempf, Portland Trail Blazers: Even though the Blazers made it to the Western Penny Hardaway, Phoenix Suns: The sign-and-trade that took Hardawayto the Westcreated one ofthe most formidable backcourts in the league overnight, pairing Hardawayand Jason Kidd. if Hardaway can stay 100 per- cent healthy, the Suns will be one of the most entertaining teams in the league, recalling the Kevin Johnson-Tom Chambers days of the late ‘80s. Nick Anderson and Tyrone Conference Finals last summer, Portland president Bob Whitsitt decided he needed to make changesto take the nextstep. All three additions are versatile guard and Corbin always seems to play more minutes — and productive minutes — than anyone imagines. Antonio Davis and Dell Curry, Toronto Raptors: The addition of Davis provides another quality big man who will prove his worth quickly and also will take some of the frontcourt load off of teammates Kevin Willis and Charles et Oakley. Curry brings his sweet stroke to a team that on somenights will Tun opponentsoutof the gym. Michael Dickerson, Othella Harrington and Grant Long, Vancouver Grizzlies: Forthefirst 2 time in team history, the Gnadies.¢é Flags OTOUAC SMITH players who can play more than oneposition. Steve Francis, Shandon Anderson and Walt Williams, Houston Rockets: The Rockets decided to surround Hakeem Olajuwon and Charles Barkley with young, athleticplayers. ancis was one of the most exciting players in college basketball last year, and it will be fascinaling to see how heandtheveierans mesh with oneanother. Jason Terry, Isaiah Rider, Lorenzen Wright and Jim Jackson, Atlanta Hawks: Like Portland, Atlanta is a perennialplayoff team that decided it could go no farther with the old cast. Most of what Atlanta wants to do relies on Terry being ready to take over the job of running the offense. Corbin, Sacramento Kings: The Kings scared Utah before bowing outin the playoffs last season, and adding two serious veterans should do nothing but help the them this season. Anderson will start at shooting aan Steres will have real depth Reunited with college teammate Mike Bibby, Dickerson should be ready to capitalize on the confidence he gained with the Rockets last year. If Bryant Reeves is in “After gpending the offseason exchanging barbs with Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippen landed a trade to Portland. shape, the Grizzlies could have their best season. Sam Cassell, J.R. Reid, Danny i Penny Hardaway, left, will play alongside Suns’ Jason Kidd. Games Manning and Dale Ellis, Milwaukee Bucks: Actually Cassell was with the Bucks last season, but was injured and barely played. Emie Grunfeld and George Karl have now surrounded youngstars Glenn Robinson and Ray Allen with the type of capable veterans that make Milwaukeean enjoyable team to watch and a dangerous team to play. Rookies Elton Brand (Chicago) and Lamar Odom (Los Angeles Clippers): Along with Francis and Terry, these two talented rookies have the best chanceto start from Day One and have a tremendous impact on their teams this season. While Brand and Odom don’t have the luxury ofveteran starting lineups alongside them like Francis and Terry, their teams will count on themtoset the tone with their work ethic and love of the game. ‘ Chris Ekstrand is a member of the NBA's editorial staff This article originally ran on nba.com.
