Show TOURIST CARS TO TOUR AUGUST AUG-UST TWELFTH. Pilots Will Lead Way to San Fran-cisco Fran-cisco Via Valley Line and ' Back Along Coast. "Bring your machines, you owners, just so they are Tourists-, and come U along," is the slogan of the biggest automobile tour ever Undertaken by I private manufacturers in California H and probably the biggest in the coun- 1 . try, which will be started under the 1 ' auspices of the Auto Vehicle Com- , pany Wednesday, August 12. Arrangements for the big run were completed yesterday in the office of Maniag'cr Conwcll of the -company after af-ter a conference with Pilot C. B. V Smith, who has just returned from' R San Francisco after an, inspection of y road conditions. 1 J The route will be to San Francisco via the VnJley line and ba'ck along the - coast. Any Tourist machine is eligible elig-ible but otlvcr makes arc ibhrrcd. The average running time of the trip, according ac-cording to careful calculations by Pilot Smith, should be fifteen miles per hour in order to complete the tour in four days. The only requirement for entering the run free of charge is that the car driven must be r. Tourist. The run will in no way be an "experts' " race and the greenest amateur at the kr wheel will have an even chance to connect with some of the prize mon- f cy, but in order to add interest to the T event, competitive features- will be in- I troduccd im the way of establishing I controls and- limiting running .time. Awards will be made for general reliability, re-liability, perfect scores and so forth. Cars Five Minutes Apart. Cars will be started on a fivc-miu-utc headway end distances between , machines will be maintained under penalty, thus assuring each car of a clear road. C. W. Sahland and C. B. Smith, who have repeatedly inspected the road, will pilot the tour and in addition to marking the route clearly with confetti and flags will supply each driver with an accurate map of distances and a time card. By this each driver will be enabled to judge at any time the location of the machine ma-chine preceding him. Representatives of the Tourist all along the route have been notified of the trip and will be in readiness to receive re-ceive members of the tour. The Tourist Company will carry repairs re-pairs and mechanics simply for the accommodation of the contestants in the 'run and two machines filled with , tires and tire fixtures will take care of all trouble in tliat line. No one r need stay out for fear of hardships or expense." Pilots Smith and Saliland say that the trip can be made easily and- comfortably com-fortably in tlio time stated and special attention has been given the requirements require-ments of inexperienced drivers in planning the route.
