Show LIBERAL misrepresentations THE methods of certain leaders of the so bo called liberal party of utah have ever been marked by misrepresentation and deceit its 51 principles chiefly consist of un carmn table attacks upon the peopled party and schemes to deprive the mormons cormons Mor mons of all aT 1 i power at present its tors tori are availing themselves of an opportunity afforded by the elements for the exercise of their talents for mendacity and are working it for much more than it is worth in a campaign document disi Itri ri buted by thousands the blame tor for the deficiency of the water supply this exceptional fleamon is put upon the peoples 5 party arty it is the party that is amused accused of all the shortcomings and deficiencies relating to this matter dmd nd it is further alleged that the party through its ora 9 9 have forced this question ato into the arena of politics that W ta they have thrown down the gage iff of battle baffle that they say in effect tj that the people must continue to huffier suf fier that I 1 they throw the whole fc iame upon god and say the people vj alls J emmist abjectly how ll 11 and these falsehoods are published in vt behalf of the so liberal 11 wy and are illustrations of its from m the beginning in the first place the management of the water supply is not in the hands bands of the peopled People ls party nor any other party itis it is under the control of the city council composed partly of members of the liberal party any strictures that may be made on the city council reflect just a much upon the liberal members as upon the others the peoples peopled party in this city as a rule are the greater sufferers from the drouth those parts parta of town where no water runs are inhabited largely by bemb df that party and liberals as well as others are taking the water for lawns and spilling it on the sidewalk sw aich should be flowing in ditches that have been perfectly dry for several weeks the peoples peopled party are no more re responsible for these inequalities than the liberal party the city officials are open to criticism but that should be conducted in truth and fairness in the second place the peoples peopled party have not forced this issue into politics in any way nor have they thrown down the gage of battle but the so called liberals are try ing to make it appear in the light of a party question which it is not as we have shown the root of the trouble is in the phenomenal drouth for which no man or party is responsible the inequalities of distribution trib ution and the question of new sou sources aces of supply are different questions these are open discussion cassion cus siOn aeno no one has said they ai ft nobody that we know of has attempted to stop discussion the liberal intimation that the city officers bave endeavored to do this is a liberal untruth and is a reflection upon the five liberal city councilors councillors Counci lors as well as upon the other members in the third place neither the peoples peopled party norace city council nor anyone else has thrown the whole blame upon god nor said the people must abjectly bow ap either in words or in effect no one one has attempted to blame the almighty for the mistakes actual or alleged of the city council the drouth of this season affects all parts of this territory in some places remote from this city the crops are fairly burned out for lack of moisture it is the attempt to make our city officials responsible for this condition of affairs that has called forth re remarks marlis con concerning derning providence and the folly of blaming men for lack of that which god or nature has withheld discussion has been invited on the distribution of the water and on obtaining a larger supply instead of saying the people must abjectly bow their complaints have been respectfully heard and extraordinary efforts have been made to remove the cause nothing is said of the hours that have been spent by night and day by the city officials to relieve 4 the present stress and secure a future adequate supply but they have been persistently misrepresented and abused while all the time they have been working to find a practical solution of the difficulty and as will be in another part of of this paper they have succeeded in securing a supply that will gladden many hearts and will prove the best beat answer that can be given to the untruthful accusations in the liberal campaign document instead of saying the people must colati continue nue to suffer the city officials cl a s have been working like beavers to remove the cause of suffering but have not been boasting about what they meant to do glittering promises without substantial al backing they have left to the liberals as campaign pabulum wherewith to dazzle the unthinking the remarks of president george Q cannon in the tabernacle and of the NEWS on the same subject have been cited as proving that nothing can be hoped for from the peoples peopled party and that they mean that in the future Us as at present the people must suffer those remarks contained no such signification it had been reported that members of the church in a country place had talked of talking taking rifles to protect their water rights president cannon deprecated quarreling and violence and taught the christian doctrine of forbearance and brotherhood and the wrong of falsely blaming the innocent the DESERET NEWS also exhorted men who had bad disputes to promote union instead of discord and not to blame either god or man for the drouth cf other troubles or AA A A such advice will be prized by the sane and consistent and should be endorsed by every lover of his race be he mormon or gentile to pervert them as intended to induce people to refrain from using their brains and to submit to injustice and wrong is infamous and is truly illustrative of liberal methods the campaign document after i these misrepresentations m asre pr ese dt actions and pompous promises of what the liberal party will do if its nominees are elected offers no practical solution of the water difficulty it does not even give a suggestion it scolds VV and blames and blusters but throws no light whatever upon the subject A prize Is offered fer the best solution CA of the problem to be paid after the election in august that is all and what is there in all this abuse of the peoples peopled party to induce auy members of that party to change fealty and vote for those who thus malign them the idea that voters can be won from the peoples peopled party by blaming the party for unavoidable difficulties and by saddling upon the whole party the mistakes of a body composed of persons from both parties is very brilliant and if it gains a a vote for the liberals in august will operate in the reverse direction from that which accords with the teachings of experience now we ask our readers what has all this to do with the election immediately before us it has no bearing whatever upon it good men and true have been selected by the peoples peopled party as candidates for certain territorial county and precinct offices there is no city official to be elected the city election does not dot occur until next february do not permit the two issues to be 4 involved and confused let the members of the peoples peopled party all determine to do their best beat to elect eject their own candidates in august we have no objection to the ellb liberals doing the same thing if they will abstain from trickery and fraud we have been accused of saying some hard things against the whole body of liberals we have done no such thing behave we have cited some facts and figures in regard ga rd to 11 liberal doings we know they are correct we have not maligned any liberal nor intimated k 1 ap that all members of that party are bad on the contrary we have stated that there are itt many conservative ge gentlemen i nt lemen 1 bona bonab aids residents honorable men in that party who vote with and for it and we had nothing to say against them outwear but we ar addax and expect to be opposed to illegal methods untruthful expressions and all the tricks and quirks which have been resorted to by persons in the liberal party and if this calls down upon our head the anathemas ana themas and vengence of such persons we will endeavor to bear them as best beat we may we want an honest and fair election whatever may be its result we will do no man an injustice wilfully no matter how much we are IJ opposed to him in politics and all we aak in tho the discussion of any eifim fi fiM question is a fair statement of the proposition or ot the facts and then let truth come uppermost and right and justice triumph for these only do we live and labor |
