Show OF CITY the mayor and city council met in regular session last evening all members being present lars ivansen appeared and asked if the city could take care of the gravel from alie excavation for the proposed county court house referred to corn on streets to investigate J johansen Johan seu ashod for the privilege of removing poplar trees from the north side of his property on main street referred to corn on streets and sidewalks with power to act corn on laws and ordinances reported in relation to the bell telephone co franchise recommending that the further consideration of the franchise be referred to the corn of the whole adopted mayor reported that an invitation had been extended by the president of the ogden portland cement co for the council to visit the plant and take dinner the company invitation vi unanimously accepted and friday january was fixed as the date mayor stated that lie had withdrawn the appointment of charles wight jr as night watchman and substituted the name of george cheal moed and seconded that the may ois appointments be confirmed roll call showed the following result J 11 Me Master aye john if II no 11 S larsen no wynn L eddy aye J hanscen no the gentlemen voting no submitted a written statement giving reasons for so doing as follows brigham city utah jan ac 1010 to the hon mayor and council brigham city utah gentlemen in opposing the mayors appointments of the city officers as submitted at the regular session held jan 12 1910 we evidence our opposition to the very inconsiderate method adopted by the mayor in making these appointments point ments and in explanation of our action we submit the following reasons and ask that the same of record as part of the proceedings of the council this day of january 1910 first the revised statute section reads the mayor by and with the advice and consent of the city council may appoint all such officers and agents as may be provided for by law or in like manner fill all vacancies among the same except as provided by law Se deml ml mayor edwith a single member of the republican majority third in accepting the position as city councilmen we did so with iliin one thought uppermost in our minds that we would serve the city to the best of our ability with this in view we waited upon the mayor and asked him it he would not reconsider his appointments assuring him that the great majority of the list he had submitted at the last council session was agreeable to us but in the inter est of biggham city we felt certain changes should be made the mayor met our request with a very emphatic refusal to consider cither our reasons or our feelings lie stated that this was a democratic administration and that the demo brats would hold themselves cespon sible to the people 0 o brigham city for the administration of its affairs notwithstanding that the republicans have three out of the five the mayor stated that he had the power and meant to maintain it and that our advice had not been sought and would not be in this matter he stated in unmistakable language that the majority of his appointments would leold their position whether they received our confirmation or bot as we did not liae the power to remove them for these reasons we vote no on the confirmation of the mayors appointments point ments should the mayor at any time deem wise to reconsider this matter we will be willing and anxious to reconsider our vote respectfully submitted LARSEN JOHN H HYRUM J the special committee appointed to audit the report of the treasurer and recorder for the year 1909 reported they had found it correct and recommended eliat it be published in both the local papers report adopted john II 11 horsley reported the attendance of himself and mayor as delegates to the municipal league convention at logani january 24 and 23 stating that the sessions ses sioni were in and interesting recorder was to issue an interest bearing warrant in laior ot lars hansen lor sum due on alre station A number ot claims were allowed and council adjourned |
