Show I Champions and fine season here on good ole mother earth usually come to an end, thus was the case with Coach Dick Conollys Weber Warriors who bowed out of the 1980 state basketball All good things tournament with losses to powerful Orem and an emotional Layton team. The Warriors danced to the Region One title with the strongest second half showing of any team in the league. Their playoff victory over Granger was also reassuring that perhaps this team might go further than most in the coveted state playoffs at the University of Utah Special Events Center. Weber opened their play in the Special Events Center with a loss to Orem, 2 last Thursday and finally d 1 on a lost to Layton, shot by Dave Burke. Lancers Emotional Ive coached for a number of years, said Coach Doug Moon of Layton, But Ive never seen a bunch of kids play with as much emotion and pure desire than this bunch. Moons statement has to be true. A first glance at his Lancer team would lead most to believe they either raided the football team for prospects or this d was merely a volleyball team in disguise. Prior to the two teams meeting in the state tournament, one meeting n had already taken place in out battled were two more and during the regular season. The 3 junior battled inside for a shot, missed, grabbed his own rebound and scored on a beautiful second effort. That tied the contest at 13 apiece. It was over four minutes into that second period before Layton finally notched their first point. But after the drought, the Lancer points came in swarms. The Lancers went on to outscore Weber 13-- 4 in the next three minutes to take a 4 lead into halftime and all the momentum in the game. Extend Lead Layton extended their lead after three quarters to mostly behind the play of hustling center, Stan Owens. This big, burley prep couldnt fool anyone that he was actually a member of a high school basketball team, but dont let looks alone deceive you. Owens almost owned and controlled the boards in the second half when things got tighter. His eight r points also helped the winning team's chances too. Johnson opened the final period with a three-poiplay to close the gap to five. Another bucket by Anderson brought Weber to within three. After a timeout by Weber, Owens popped in two straight jumpers to extend the lead to 5 for Layton. Johnson helped close the gap with and moments later a Skeen added a freethrow. With just over a minute remaining, Johnson brought the Weber cheering section to its feet when he scored on a jumper toss and was fouled. His charity-stri- p was good and the score was tied. After losing to Ogden twice, Jeff admitted, We just couldnt match up well against those guys, probably because of our height disadvantage. His coach, Mike Gardner, commented, Jeff has to be the finest shooter, possibly the purest shooter that Ive ever coached in my 11 years at Davis High School. Emery is not only a star on the basketball court but starred for two years on the gridiron and three years on the varsity baseball level.
