Clearfield came back Wednesday in the second game to defeat the Panthers of West High School by eight points, but lost game number three to Skyview, whom the Falcbns had defeated twice in region play. Scott Wallace swished in 14 field goals, and hit three for four from the line for 31 big points to over power the Panthers 78 to 70 in the second round of tournament play. For openers, not many people realized that Jeff came down with a bad chest cold on Monday and had to be rested periodically by his coach. He felt somewhat better in Wednesdays game with Brighton, but in that contest, Jeff broke a bone in his right hand, and played the remaining two quarters, plus three overtime periods, not knowing it was hurt. Even now he isnt sure when the hand was injured. He first noticed the pain at half time. Contrary to wide spread rumor, he did not hurt the hand in the last quarter, when he was whistled for an offensive charge, hit the padded basket post in disgust. Scott has been Clearfields premiere scorer, and a 90 percent shooter from the foul line all season long. His shots werent favoring him in this, his last high school game. A decision by his parents, back in his kindergarten days, has stirred up a lot of what ifs among Royal faithful. What if he had another year to play? Roy should be strong in 1979 even without Jeff but can you imagine its strength if they had him back? The Scholtecs came to Roy from Minnesota via Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Jeff was born at Vandenberg where his father was stationed with the Air Force. Master Sargent Russell Scholtec and his wife Betty were transfered to Hill AFB in 1973, and brought with them three young boys who were destined to do great things for basketball in Roy. Alan Scholtec starred for the Royals from 1973 to 1975 and still holds several records at Roy High. He is now a junior at Mesa College in Grand Junction, Colorado, where he plays basketball on a four year scholarship. Jeff and Alan have a little brother Steve, who could become the brightest is six feet tall, and is a starter for the Scholtec star. Steve, an eighth-grade- r, Roy Junior High School. Some of that Scholtec talent should rub off on baby brother. Where could you find better tutors than Jeff and Alan for a fledgeling star? Ironically, Jeff Scholtec never played basketball In junior high. He was cut from the Roy Junior High team when he was in the ninth grade. Harry Hall is credited for discovering Jeff Scholtec. Harry picked Jeff up on one of his recreation teams and had worked with him for two years before he grew five inches and made the Roy High sophomore team. Like he has done for so many Roy athletes, (and others) Harry provided the means for Jeff to play a lot of basketball in Junior Olympics, National Guard, Recreation Teams, and Explorer Scout basketball. Russell Scholtec wasnt at first convinced his son wanted to play basketball. MARK REID son. Harry smiled when he told how Russell replied that Jeff was too busy in music and probably wasnt interested in basketball. But Jeff was interested in basketball. He had watched his big brother compete, and the seed was planted. As a sophomore, Jeff suited up with the junior varsity team, and had gotten some playing time. When he was a junior, he made starting center for the Royals. This year as a senior he has become star of the team. Meanwhile, during the summer months Jeff has kept in touch with Harry Hall and his many basketball programs, in order to gain experience and confidence.
